Brake Upgrades

Post by Imax » Sun Sep 23, 2007 4:15 pm

Hi,

I have never been over impressed with the brakes on my RS4 after having some initial problems when I got it... I've been looking at how I can improve them and one idea is to get fast road pads. I have found Pagid do some called RS4-4 Orange. The front and rear pads cost total £300... Has anyone ever used them and how do you rate them...?

Thanks

Imax

I'd be careful when going after a brake system that perhaps doesnt have a lot of users or history on here ( by the look of it) Most of us agree with the disapointing stock brake setup on the b5 so IMHO go for a B7 or RS6 caliper and disc upgrade and your notice a huge improvement. Might be a couple of quid more but when your driving a performance car you need to have confidence in your stoppers :) Hey they look good too!

Hi Mev,

Thanks for the reply. I take on board what you say and I guess I just need to be sitting down when they give me the cost of the upgrade.

The next question would be what would be the best option the B7 upgrade or the RS6...?

Thanks :beerchug:

Hi Imax,

I'd go for the B7 floating discs and (as MEV says) the B7 or RS6 calipers (they're the same). If you go for the B7 discs rather than the RS6 then you won't need an adapter bracket for the caliper.

What you spend on brakes depends on what you plan to use the car for. Do you want to do trackdays and the like or just get a better pedal feel ? in money terms, it could be £ 1300 vs the £ 300 you planned on spending. I would expect the Pagid's to be good, they have an excellent reputation for performance road and all types of racing pads.

I found the RS6 caliper and RS4 B7 Disc upgrade fantastic. Much better pedal feel, shorter stopping distances and no fade at all. I got them done by Doug at MRC, was better value than when I looked at other options. If you try and get the parts individually, it was even more expensive. The calipers alone were £700 on ebay. If you go for the upgrade, you can still sell the original RS4 calipers so that will offset the upgrade price a bit, especially if the discs need replacing anyway.

I have used Pagid Blue before and found them very good for road use but they will eat your discs, you can feel the bits of the disc on the wheels when your cleaning them.

I have used the RS6 calipers and B7 RS4 discs on both my B6 S4 and RS4 and find them good enough but not out of this world but for £1000 per car great value.

A better option is the VW Phaton 6.0 front discs as they don't have the stupid holes and you can get them sloted.
