Sudden loss of power - please help!
Sudden loss of power - please help!
Hi,
I have an N reg A4 1.8T , about 6 months ago the turbo blew, have had a long running saga since. I had a new one fitted by my local garage, this turbo was faulty so they replaced it with another then a bit of exhaust blew, then the next bit blew, both replaced.
Now I have a problem when I accelerate hard, if I stick the pedal down the car suddenly loses power and sounds / feels like something is about to snap, if I take my foot off the pedal and apply again lightly it continues fine. The garage first fitted a new "temperature sensor", this didn't fix it, they have just fitted a new "diaphram", this hasn't fixed it either - they are now scratching their heads... They can replicate it but it doesn't give out any fault codes.
I confess I don't really know much about engines in the slightest but if anyone can suggest something I can suggest to the garage I'd be extremely grateful as this is driving me mad now! Is this time to take it to Audi? I've already spent a fortune so would really rather not....
Many thanks,
Nick.

RE: Sudden loss of power - please help!
I'm guessing you posted here because you've got an RS4 engine?

Buy and RS4 and you'll stop worrying about the old A4nmoore wrote:..stuff about a 1.8T engine not working in a really old A4
...sorry, can't help with your problem

Oak trees grow from Acorns. So a 1.8T owner of today maybe the S4 or RS4 owner of tomorrow!
Its a sad fact that, generally, Audi garages lack the expertise to fix turbo engine problems, especially when the cars get older and start showing problems that the techs don't normally encounter. This is when you need the services of a a proper "mechanic" rather than someone who can read a fault code reader.
My advice is to get your car to a a decent indy to be sorted out.
You don't say where you hail from, so cannot suggest where you ought to go for some decent help!

Just trying to be helpful here: You sometimes get what you pay for. Take the car to a good Audi dealer or a better independend shop than what you are currently dealing with. Good luck!

VAGcom wont help as there are no fault codes being flagged as the op said.
Have they checked the Diverter Valves?

Sorry about posting here, was recommended this site by a colleague, wasn't sure where to post, this one had a 4 in it!
Thanks for the helpful replies, will ask about the diverter valves...
RE: Re: Sudden loss of power - please help!
Vagcom may still be of some help - although no fault codes are being thrown, you may be able to check the outout of various sensors whilst on the move, mAF readings, EGT temperatures and all sorts of stuff.

Note: The 1.8T will only have one diverter valve.
