MTM / QST Upgrade
Hi guys,
Considering QST for an MTM upgrade (420BHP), because my Rs4 seems inconsistent with power delivery & whilst its very fast it feels like it can deliver more. need some advice if poss?
1. Is there a chance that all the torque will damage my gearbox or engine? Are these chips best avoided if I still want reliability?
2. £800 + VAT seems expensive for what seems to be just a software upgrade? Am I missing something?
3. Do people normally tell their insurance companies about these invisible upgrades? Is there a risk?
4. Would I be better off with a tune up, induction kit & a better exhaust?
Cheers!
Steve

RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
1) I have between 500 and 550bhp(MTM Germany) in mine with over 100k and no problems with the gearbox(however the clutch was upgraded)
2) £800 isn't the cheepest or the most expencive
3) I do but can't say for others
4) Forget the induction kit unless your going for massive bhp and maybe even then. Exhaust I'd without a doubt.
A lot of people on here seem to like MRC, I don't know them so can't say but I'm happy with my MTM but I'd always go to Germany

RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
Hi Bahnstormer.
I have used QST twice now for my upgrades. Can't fault Kim at all. He's always been professional with me and i've always had good advice.
If you have inconsistency with your power there might be other problems starting to lurk in the background, best get it checked by someone as it could turn into something very expensive.
As far as the rest of your questions i'll ditto what 'I-want-an-RS' has said.
If you could afford having the Milltek exhaust system (lovely sound to boot) put on as well as the software upgrade you'll have people looking at your huge grin as your making your way home. Lol!!

RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
I am in the same situation as you Bahnstormer, I came out of my RS2 and found myself a little disappointed with the power of the RS4 (although it is a far superior car), tuning German cars here in NZ is a nightmare, I am going for the Miltek but taking my cats out and getting a chip upgrade, please let me know how you get on, Cheers
Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
Get that looked at first so you have a good baseline before you start modding. I took my car to MTM Germany with no regrets - it has been a great dependable driver. What you are most likely lacking (once you have your tune up) is lower end torque. The chip will get you that and you can upgrade from there.MazSherwood wrote: If you have inconsistency with your power there might be other problems starting to lurk in the background, best get it checked by someone as it could turn into something very expensive.

RE: Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
I bought my MTM Stage 2 RS4 (428bhp ish) at 59k miles, converted by 2nd owner a few years back.
Even though it ran OK, as soon as I bought it I changed the DVs and the MAF (which are common failings on non-modified cars too) and after 5000 miles it's been 100% consistent in how it performs and never fails to surprise me with it's performance and has averaged 23.6mpg.
My car was advertised as Audi with no mention of mods but someone from here recognised it having been to qst and an email was sent to Kim who replied promptly saying he remembered it. The short shift fitted at same time is probably the most important mod though!

Thanks! Drove it again yesterday (I use it at weekends only, usually just Sundays) and I'll never get bored of that power over such a wide rev rangeThats what I call a lucky find

Hi Bahnstormer,
I had an MTM stage I on my RS4 - I bought the car with it already re-mapped. IMHO you shouldn't have these worries at all, but get the car running right first.
2. As mentioned above, there are cheaper upgrades out there including custom remapping which can then be upgraded if you change other parts of the engine/exhaust etc.
3. This has been covered many times before and you must advise your insurance company. If you don't tell them, you are effectively driving around un-insured.
4. The underlying problems should be sorted out before anyone remaps/chips the car....then consider other stuff afterwards. Power gains from induction kits and exhausts per £ are low compared with chips/remaps. You might want to consider the remap, then brake and suspension upgrades before you go further.
Good luck.
Paul

RE: Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
Thanks all thats great feedback,
The car is currently in with Walton Audi, the technician there has said that there is a problem with the exhaust temp sensors affecting the boost?
Allegedly they sense the temp is too high & reduce power accordingly?
They plan to replace them today so I'm hoping the car will be back to the baseline from today. Once I've experienced what the cars supposed to respond like then I'll look at the ecu & exhaust upgrade.

RE: Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
sounds unusually likely for an Audi stealer diagnosis!
This chap is having same problem too.

Check that there are two temp sensors before you pay for two as I seem to recall S4 has two, RS4 has one but I could be wrong

Audi Stealers, you're not kidding, they are charging me £230 to replace the seal on the washer bottle pump, and tried to charge me £215 each for front tires!!

Yeah...but they do normally provide you with an impressive Courtesy Car....an A2 1.4TDi.Audi Stealers, you're not kidding, they are charging me £230 to replace the seal on the washer bottle pump, and tried to charge me £215 each for front tires!!

RE: Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
They gave me an A4 2.0 automatic (estate), my girlfriend couldn't tell the difference between that & my RS4!! , it really is gutless, dull dull dull, I'd rather go by train it would be more entertaining. Who buys "normal" cars anyway? Its probably worth alot more than my RS4 but man its grim.
RE: Re: RE: MTM / QST Upgrade
Once the running issues are sorted out, your g/f will notice the difference in performance. Mind you I cannot imagine an RS4 running so badly that you can't tell the difference between it and an A4 auto...you'd have to remove five spark plugs to make it thatgutless.
