B5 RS 4 or B5 S4

Hey guys, can I get your opinions on what I should go for....

Thinking of either a B5RS4 Avant or a B6S4 Avant.... one of the issues I'm going to have is that in Ireland you can only get 95 octane.

Just throw the feedback around guys. Servicing costs etc. etc. I need to think about everything. Road tax is going to be dearer on the B6 for me but not by a whole lot...

Seen the thread on 95 fuel and agree the RS4 doesn't like it. Not sure about an S4 on 95 though. Have a look at

Hope you find a good one.

They have V power in Ireland, infact they had V power long before we had it over here.

I have both the cars your thinking of and to be honest, I get up in the morning and don't know what I'll take out untill I get to the garage. The RS is much much quicker but it has been tuned a good bit and I think that if both cars were standard then I'd probably go for the S4 more than I do at the moment.

Running them both they are about the same as what you'll spend extra on fuel bills on the S4 you'll save on servicing it.

I have ran both car on 95 for a month about a year ago just to see what difference it made to them and while it didn't make that big of difference it did make more of a one in the RS

Common misconception... V power over here is actually 95 octane. Next to impossible to get 97 octane....

I'm strongly thinking of the RS4 cause I like the whole, well.... not quite wolf in a sheep clothing... more like grizzly bear in a baby grow.

Sorry Ken but have to dissagree with you on that one.

V power in Ireland is the very same as you get any where in europe, been over there a lot with the rally team. When we are there I use V power and the car doesn't suffer from any lose of power and that's after a few tanks of the stuff where as here when I used the 95(Shell) I noticed the drop after the first tank full.

Infact a few of us thought that our cars were more punchy after a few fill-ups over there, this is when we had, <beep> I can't remember what V power was called over here before it was V power

Hey I-want-an-rs ... afraid I've to disagree with you. http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?sit ... _1602.html

Definitely 95 octane over here which is a pain in the rocks.

What are the service costs like on an RS and the MPG like? MPG doesn't bother me a whole lot as I don't do a lot of mileage

Buy a bulk lot of millers octane boost and an RS. The B6 is a nice car, but imo it won't hold its money as well

When i bought my RS4 i too considered the softer option but in the form of a b5 s4,I found what looked like a perfect car in the autotrader but then found myself skimming through the RS4s and new i would never be happy until id had the Daddy, its been with me nearly 3 years now and i dont want to replace it,for me thats very good going i used to swap regurlaly, the B6 is a fine car but has that nearly a sports car tag on it for me,the B5 RS4 has its faults and finding a good one now must be fairly hard but imo well worth it

I'm strongly thinking of the bulk buy millers and an RS4 alright. Need to get my car sold first before I can go down that route. Could be hard to find a good one alright.... could prove costly considering I'll be coming over from Ireland every time to look. Hopefully I can get enough info on each one to include/exclude it from my list. I reckon I'd be the same on the RS4 S4, always wondering what the quicker would be like.

Want to get something that fills all the boxes, performance, practical (Baby recently arrived) buggy etc, MPG (don't do a whole lot of mileage so doesn't really bother me), insurance isn't too bad on it (Not many of them at all in Ireland so I think insurance companies under estimate them), car tax not much difference to what I have (BMW E46 325Ci)

Ken, if you find one that you like over here and need someone to have a good look at it for you before you come over I might be able to help as I travel a good bit with work.

A lot of the time you can get people saying that the car is in new condition when it's plain to see that it's had a hard life. I have vag com and I know the B5 fairly well.

If you could do that for me it would be greatly appreciated! Look after you too as it hopefully should save me a few quid.

Might be a little while before i'm actually in the market myself. Need to wait for mine to be sold.

I'd be an enthusiast so fairly high standards. Have a mint E46 325Ci that I'm trying to sell at the moment (Only up for sale this week). Market over here can be a little hit and miss at times. The first person to come out will buy it but its getting that bite....

Cheers...

Hi there. I'm new to the site. What a great site!!! So informative! Anyways just thought i'd put a comment in with regards to 'V' power fuel. According to the literature which is in most of the shell garages that i have been into, it says that 'V' power is around the 99 octane. Now i would presume this to be accurate or its false advertising! Just looked on their web site:- shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=uk- en&.../vpower_p/introduction.html , then click on 'All about shell V power' this also states the same. I currently run my toy on it even if i have to travel about 10 miles (minimum) to get it!!! Joys of living in the back of beyond!!!!
