fixing an rs4 FDP gearbox

Post by dummi » Thu Aug 16, 2007 6:07 pm

i'm planning to make the box useable and to do so i need to know what parts are different from the 2000 FDP box to the 2001 , i have ETOS from ebay but it only gives 2001-2 , i'm really stuck now on what exactly i need to change, as far as i know it is the syncro's for first and second gear and their hub, but i could be wrong, i need to know parts and part numbers required ... thanks

Hi,

FDP is FDP but FDP is the oldes box and therefor can be ugraded with the goodies of the newer boxes.

These are the manifacture dates:

FDP/FRQ from 11.00 to 04.01
FTU from 04.01 to 09.01
FZW/FZV from 01.02 (service Boxes with the 1/2 sync update)

Now I know that you need the 1/2nd sync hub/locking collar upgrade. I've also seen later boxes having a wider 1st gear but I can't find that confirmed in any audi docs. But the wider 1st exists!!

The complete 1/2 gear sync repair set is # 01E 398 270

I will see if I can find the wider 1st gear part numbers and will post if I do.

hope that helps,
Dave

i didn't know about the wider first gear, i take it that was not actually a problem they just wanted to upgrade it from 3.5:1 'while they were in there' ?

My etka7 does not know about # 01E 398 270. Do you know how much for the set?

I found these #:

01e311239l synchronizing hub 1st 2nd = 280eur
012311247H synchronizer ring 1st 2nd = 2*59eur

01E311257F first gear
01E311271B second gear

012311295F synchronizer ring 3 4 5 6 = 4*29eur
01E311301 synchronizing hub 3rd 4th = 217eur

Not wider like longer in ratio !

Wider as in the actual gears are 10% wider to take more torque.

those are 2001 numbers but I'm pretty sure they are the same in newer ones too. Oh normally the gears themselves are fine so you only need the synchros and slider.

Dave: I tried without spaces too but i guess I should run the update but I dont want to risk a working etka7 by updating as it always stucks at vw update.

Pretty much all 01E's had a 3.50 first gear ratio. The exception to the rule is the allroad and a tdi transmissions built after 2003, which had a 3.75 first gear ratio.

The wide first gears (26mm) were utilized in 1996 and later. The earlier 01E's has a 22mm first gear.

To update the 1-2 shift collar, you need the following pieces:

Qty1 01E311239L
Qty2 012311247H

The brass syncro rings in 3-6 gears are also updated to 012311295F.

These guys offer kits for the 01E.
