Hows the coolant level - if its going down surpise surprise youve got a leak from somewhere in the system. Most likely offender is afterrun pump located in V below intake manifold or could be simply be a clip thats come undone from one of the hoses.

Could be one of the headlight washers, or the washer reservoir pump leaking? This is common on S4's, not so sure about the RS4 though?

behind the front n/s wheel towards the centre of the car.............. so its not that

The washer bottle is a known problem and sits about where the leak is coming from.........

Fair enough but it was on my mind as paying for petrol recently all the cars including our new landy seemed to have sprung leaks for a moment before the explaination dawned.

My Rangy Sport will dump what looks like a gallon of water on the floor on a hot day, the B5 is not as bad as that although it does leave a puddle,

Washer pump is quite cheap to replace (about £30 from memory) but it is a bit of a pain to change. You need to remove the n/s front wheel and arch liner then you can see the washer tank. The pump is on the inside so you need to remove the tank completely to change the pump.
