Its a long shot but you could try tracking down a company that produces leather etc e.g. a tannery. They should know if you can do anything with it.

Mine has gone decidedly flat, and the new wheel is not as thick as the old one, may have to revert to the leather one again  if I cant tart it up.

This might sound stupid but would thoes products that you can get for suede to make it look good again, do you think it would work.

Dont see why not - Alcantara, like suede, is a leather derivative and is very durable hence appropriate for upholstery, and will no doubt behave similarly to suede. Anyone had someone step on their blue suede shoes? Wasn't the end of the world eh?

I have a Ligne Rosset suite made from Alcantara which is very cleanable and comes with instructions for different stains etc - warm water and clean cloth shifts most stains TBH in conjunction with light detergent for the more stubborn marks from palm sweat (other bodily fluids) etc. A light buff with a suede brush should revatilise the flatter ones out there too.

Once clean easy maintenance going forward would be to wash hands before driving or the wearing of good old fashioned driving gloves!
