Safe EGT value

Post by Tomasz » Thu May 18, 2006 4:19 pm

My car had ECU remaped. It was done in Poland by VTG our best VAG specialists (www.vtg.pl).
EGT of stock car had been pretty high - about 1050 degrees (in celsius scale) but after I powered my RS4 the EGT increased to 1100 degrees (mesured by Defi Link Meter). :!:

Of course I'm confused with it because I don't know if such temperature is still safe for my engine (first of all I'm afraid of pistons). :?:
Please, answer what are EGTs measured in yours tuned RS4s?
Should I worry?
Thanks

I never meagered EGT on mine, I got 450hp and 50 000Km, the engine is in perfect condition, I don’t thing that it can be a problem on yours.

I think any EGTs above 950 degrees are dangerous and you're putting your engine under excessive stress. Turbines are only good for 980 degrees in KKK turbos, and exhaust valves don't like more than 1000 degrees EGTs for very long either. Stock RS4s run up to 980 degrees if nothing is wrong with them, this is EGTs measured by the stock sensors in the exhaust manifolds.

Thanks for your reply (waiting for more EGT values from other RS4 users).
Special thanks for S2tuner for his proffesional answer.

I would like to mark that I've got my Defi EGT sensor between 2 nad 3 valve (cylinder) and about 12 cm (5") from exhaust valve. I was told that I shouldn't bother about so high EGT displayed by Defi Meter becuse it's at about 100 degrees higer than stock sensors are measuring.
To be honest for me it makes sense because if the EGT was too high engine would work in emergency mode (ECU can start this procedure according to measurements of EGT stock sensors).
Of course I would like to believe that I'm right otherwise should prepare a suitcase filled with $$ for new turbos, valves etc... :?
