rs4 milltek exhaust too noisy - what options are there

Post by duncanhancox » Mon Nov 21, 2005 3:36 pm

ive got 100 cell cats, resonator pipes?? and later milltek exhaust (apparently) on my mtm 519hp car but the general noise at low revs and town driving are making me mad - i sound like some saxo with 4" pipe and the resonance between 1500 and 3000 is loud and annoying. above 3000 its there but quiet until you give it full throttle when it screams beautifully.

so what to do?

anyone experiences of the alternatives?

custom back box or exit pipes?
MTM rs4 exhaust?
sportec?
oem rear box?

Firstly make sure it's fitted properly...I took a ride in FlashyG's recently and it sounded much much better (less boomy) after he had it re-fitted by Miltek themselves.

519bhp... Does it go well? If you're ever paying a visit to AMD I'd be interested to see the difference. I have full Miltek on mine (200 cell, so quieter I think?) and it's juuust, OK. Anymore and I'd be concerned I was slipping in to Chavsville. Can't help with the alternatives, I just know they're expensive!

Hi Duncan - is there not a danger that whatever you do to reduce noise is going to increase back pressure and therefore increase EGT / reduce power output? Seems to me that if you want 519bhp, there may be a compromise or two required ;-)

yes i understand i MAY need to lose a bit of power to get a quiet life, but how often do i use 519hp? a lot less than tootling around with a noisy exhaust

however, the exhaust goes totally quiet at 3000rph, so its noisier at a lower flow - probably resonance and exit pipe design?

anyone got mtm or sportec?

Mtm do their own exhaust, twin pipes all the way through, as I recall, JohnRS4 had the said article on his car..... but from memory it was louder than my Miltek and 200 cell cats,....................

.....and your 200 cell cats are quieter (nice though) than my GmbH exhaust too.

There is absolutely no resonance from the new improved miltec product.
you must have some fitting / heat shield o maybe cat issue.

Go to miltec or the original tuner. The product on the car is of extremely good quality but there are so many variables around it that could be causing the problems.

At 3 k with minimum load the car is like stock. 80 mph crusing.Ask for power and the noise comes in . performance is unleashed and noise is a by-product.

I hope you sort the issues out. The old non dual system did have resonance issues again if this is your problem let the manufacturer know. They want to know if you have issues. They pride them selves on there reputation.

qst fitted the system - kim thinks its quiet....

there are dual pipes through to the first silencer box then not sure after that.

mine is quiet at 3k , its between 1.5 and 3k where the problem lies...

at least thats mtm off my list though. - i need to go to milltek i think

A custom back box wouldn't be that expensive. I know plenty of folks who have had a custom set up for £400. Albeit they weren't RS4 systems and they were from the CAT back, but you get exactly what you want from the tail pipe to the No. of boxes. So I don't see why modifying the existing Miltech would be expensive. Furthermore, I don't see why a straight through silencer will produce noticeable back pressure.

As for quality of the other guys - well Miltech's weld quality is at best average, simply fit for purpose (I'm an ex-welder / plater who still dabbles)

I have suggested Supersprint in the past, very good fit not loud. Replacement cats are available as well.
Sebring is another quality system worth a look. Good enough for AMG.

How catastrophic for performance would putting an OEM exhaust on be do we think? Would need the map tweaking I'm sure....

i was wondering the same thing - i can keep the 100 cell cats, downpipes, central section and first silencer maybe, but use an oem rear box for better silencing.

since the cat-back milltek releases almost no power, i guess the rear system isnt adding much restriction to the system...
