Are rs4's on the whole fairly unreliable, they always seems to be things breaking, especially turbos etc.?Also is it worth leaving examples with 70k miles well alone?

hi ryan (I assume you're the same one thats on seatcupra.net?)
I whilst only having an S4, as opposed to an RS4, would say that they're not particularly unreliable, infact almost the opposite. Remember people are far less likely to make emphatic posts when everything is all hunkydory.
Provided a car is looked after all should be ok...if you're worried...then buy from a dealer (whether francished, or independant like fontain) and get a decent warranty with it, so you'll be covered if something unexpected and expensive goes wrong.
will this be in addition to your IHI powered S3?
thanks

I can spin you both sides of the coin, I had a brand new RS4 which did nothing but go wrong, handed it back to Audi after 7 months and walked away............. but the bug had bitten and I had to have another, so I bought one, and have done 60 K miles in it without major issue, the clutch has been done, the suspension replaced and the a few mechanicals and electricals sorted, but it has had a hard but sympathetic life, and has never let me down................

Thanks for the replies, yes it is me,just been looking for another car to go with the s3 and the big boot would come in really handy .I've seen quite a few cheap rs4's advertised and thought it might be the time too buy,but i need the car to be fairly reliable and don't want to be landed with massive bills so thought i'd ask.
p.s Couldn't sell the s3,absolute joy to drive.

Must say I have been happy as larry with the RS4, no problems other than a minor oil leak which was fixed by Audi for no charge...yes thats no charge by my local guys. In fact I have racked up about 10k miles in the last 6 months too which for me is an awful lot given the car only gets driven about every two weeks.
In short its been a reliable car

Same here, Ive owned my RS4 for around 4 month's now. I had a minor problem with the suspension to begin with but all in all (touch wood!) she has run well.
Makes me smile everytime I drive her, I think providing she has been looked after a high mileage RS4 shouldnt be a problem to own, they seem pretty bomb proof and various servicing parts can be bought from places like Euro Car parts, I just changed my battery for a bosch one from them and it cost me £61.00 (inc), Audi wanted £95.00 + vat!!
Plus the wealth of knowledge on here will help if you decide to buy one.....dont wait mate just go and get one..you wont regret it!

Unreliable? I've had absolutely no problems with mine either. Have carried out a few modifications and tracked it twice. Its just lapped it up. Loved the S3 that I had before but this is something else entirely

Never had a problem with mine since the day I bought it! - owned it for about 18 months now.

I've had my RS4 for over 18 months and it has been more reliable than the S4 I had before.....if you ignore the turbo failure which was covered by the warranty anyway. My RS4 now has 72k on the clock.
There have been previous postings about reliability/costs etc - I think you need to get things into perspective a little, never lose sight of the fact that the RS4 is a very high performance motor car.

I've had mine for a litle over a year and 20k miles (now on 67k) and I haven't had any more issues than with any other car I've ever had (touch wood) I don't want to jinx it by saying it's been fine, had the gearbox replaced but that was covered by warrantee (£7k worth of thank god!). So I can't complain at all. And given the ridiculous performance, fuel economy hasn't been too bad (about 100 miles less per tank than my S3 did).

I've done 14K in 12 months of ownership and no problems at all. Just a service, a new set of tyres and just about to put new front discs on at 54K.

Thanks for the replies, all sounds good. Not really concerned with mega performance as it's more of a cruiser which is ideal, the s3 is more than a match for most things.
