tappets???

Post by iq » Thu Aug 18, 2005 1:32 pm

Love my car but am a little upset at the impending feeling that it is falling apart!!!!.

Now at 74k miles. Few interior rattles not an issue.

??Tappet noise.

Rattle when engine switched off.

Wheels keep buckling.

Due in to dealer in two weeks so I will keep you all posted.

Anyone have similar crap with theirs?

Also, does anyone have any concerns about getting it REVO'd at this high mileage?

Cheers DUDES.

Tapet noise is not unusual in Audis, try a fresh fill of oil and a filter, if that does not work, the tapets may need replaced but more usually the oil change works............. mine with 65k on the clock does the same once the oil has a few miles on it, I dont trust the service indicator rubbish, a car with that much bhp creates heat and this is a far cheaper option than tapets. As one of the original owners, I have to say the problems you are having are not unusual, the wheel issue is well known and you need to check if you have the soft wheels to get them changed FOC, or opt for the harder one off replacemnt wheels, I have not bent a set of these since they were fitted. The rattle at switch off is more than likely a heat shield, dip the clutch next time before switching off to rule out the clutch release bearing.............. the rest of the problems is well known and can be found by doing a search :bigwave:

I wouldn't feel too down at 75k miles, I don't many cars that don't have these kind of niggles.

In my own case I find its a question of high expectations from a car of this cost. VW/Audi/Seat group have done a bloody good job at convincing us all that "If only everything was a reliable as a VW / Audi (same difference)" In reality all the modern German cars are ranking poorly in reliability. Just look at the positive points its an exceptional animal but its got a few warts that have to be dealt with from time to time.

On a positive note One of the lads on here had his Revo'd with 150K miles on the clock. The engine is good for it and even the turbos. But you could be unlucky and a turbo might fail. IMO I don't believe the turbos are that weak.

I had one of the very first S4s with the alleged weak KKK03 trubos and small oil pipes. I bought it second hand with 32K miles and then chipped it with 45K on the clock and ran it until 68K on the clock - no probs with turbos.

However, my stock 2nd hand RS4 popped its turbo with only 34K miles 6months after buying it. I warmed it up and cooled it down the same as the S4. You just never know. But I'd be more positive than negative. Its interesting when you discuss the reliability of the S4/RS4 turbos with dealers. None of the dealer's mechanics I've talked to consider them weak!

Go for it. If nothing else go for the trail to see what it does.

I have my own theory that the turbos aren't as weak as you might
