All rs4 do this initially, mine does it especially when parked up for a while, even a fresh sump full of oil has not stopped it after long periods of not using it, if used every day it will do for a second or so then go dead quite...when was the oil last changed? I know the variable service time is usually about 10k miles, but I would change the oil at least once inbetween the services.

Is it not because of forged pistons?

I "heard" that forged pistons need to heat up a bit and may
make a bit of noise when the engine is cold. This was from a tech
source on the web somewhere (i.e. not a used car or dealer fob
off)

Defo tappet rattle, not any other source for this particular noise.......my cossy is very rattley when cold, it was explained that because the engine is under some pressure, they increased tolerances when cold.......remeber the first time I started the car from cold......thought I had over thrashed it on the way home the previous night.

Hydraulic tappets - very common trait on Rover V8's too. Would only expect to briefly hear them after several days of non use though...? Havent yet heard them rattling from cold on mine. D

More likely to be chain rattle on the variable valve timing elements, my S4 (AGB) does this on Bank 2 and will be sorted either by replacing the oil gallery one way valves under a cover in the block or the element itself.
Mine sounds like a harsh rattle when first started until the oil pressure builds up.

I have the same noise as stated in earlier in this topic. Only when my RS4 is started for the first time mornings. It's only a second or so but it not a good sound to hear.....

So, after the oil was changed, was it better or did you have to replace chains or the variable valve timer/chains tensioner?

Greetings from Holland.

Mine has had a minor rattle on start-up since I bought it 18 months ago. It goes after less than a second. And doesn't matter whether I have fresh oil or end of life oil in the engine.
