Turbo failure?

Post by pat68 » Tue Apr 20, 2004 1:10 pm

Hi
I'm just wondering if I have a sneaking turbo failure. I observed on the outside of the air inlet circuitry of the driver side turbo, that on the interconnections there's a slight oil film noticable. I also noticed when I was only driving very short distances and the car was standing for a day, there will be smoke for first 2-3 times the turbos spool up. If the car is warmed up, there's no smoke at all, even under full load. The car has now 60k km on the clock and is not chipped.

So Patrick, where have you been all these years? RS4 owner presumably, and this is your first post?

Hhmm it doesn't sound good. One thing I would say to all, is that there is always a small amount of oil present in the intake system by virtue of the crankcase breather system, which dumps small amounts of oil vapours into the intake system to clean up emmisions. So don't always assume the worst when you remove an intercooler or DV etc to find oil. It can be a reasonable coating too.

However, you should never see white/blue smoke from exhaust. This is NOT a good sign :(
