so i'm having an argument with my brother in regards to my oettinger chipped rs4 vs his friends 996 911 turbo (stock)
whats the figures of the porsche?
who wins on the track?
etc?
please don't be biased, i said my rs4 would be able to hang with the porsche, he said it wouldn't
i know its all driver related, etc. but lets take that out of the equation

Hmm, here we go again. I'm ducking already. Standard RS4 can hold it everywhere except down the straights. Seen it at JP Autodrome and Spa.

Mine keeps up with a 996 Turbo in a straight line!! no problems. No idea for the track!

at my VMAX days we've done similar comparisons, ie rolling starts over 1 and 2 miles between RS4's(chipped and fettled & standard), 996TT's (and most other high performance cars you can imagine).

The RS4's whilst undeniably obscenely fast dont really hold a torch to the turbo'd porkers on a straight blast, once over about 120mph the porsches do pull away. On a proper track I'd guess that it may be closer, but as you rightly say, would be largely down to the driver.

By the way, the speeds through the traps at the end were generally around 170-182 for the audi, 185 to 192 for the porker.

In a recent drive with my mate in his stock 996 Turbo my RS4 was slightly quicker cross country, all B roads, early morning, never exceeding 3 figures for too long before braking. His car did had track worn Michelins to my pretty fresh Pilot Sports.
On way back we swapped, I found his 996 easily kept up with my car and felt stronger in 4th and 5th. Not using my 996 C4S much since the Audi joined my household though.
Both were trounced when I put on my leathers and got on the Honda though 8)

I agree Craig, but the porkers did have the X50 pack as well. Oh and good drivers 8)
As Andy once said, the RS4 is like driving a barn door through custard

Craig is correct. Get above 110 - 120mph, and certainly the X-50 equipped turbos inexorably put clear air between themselves and even modded RS4's.

Laws of aerodynamics very clearly at work here. Any RS4 is going to easily need 50 - 60 hp more than any 996 to stay with it above 120mph. So for a straight line shootout, figure on needing 470hp to deal with a turbo, or 500hp to deal with an X-50.

Oh - and make sure its a cold day, 'cos otherwise his intercoolers will be working more efficiently than yours :)

I'll throw in an SL55 for more discussion! Chased one up the M40 day I picked the car up from John. Right behind him at indicated 160!! the look on his face was priceless when we slowed and I passed him. 90k merc, audi estate???? :D :kissmyrings:

ha, stunning quote! :D

on vmax 2 the tiptronic porker turbo was a non x50, I'm sure he was quicker than the rs4 but my memory is a little hazy.

by the way, would you guys be interested in doing an all/strongly biased towards Audi VMAX day ?

About the question if the RS4 can be as fast as 996TT on the track.

My car has a very good setup for the track and it´s quite fast. I have also experienced that I can do similar lap times as the Lamborghini Murcielago (600hp version with the factory sports exhaust).

BUT! a friend of mine bought a 530HP Techart 996TT recently and we tested our cars on the track. I have to say that he is much faster! another class! There is no way I can keep up with him even for a while.

It´s not just the acceleration, it´s the overall handling and THE BRAKES! And that is a strange thing because my fronts are bigger and better than his (rears are similar), but still the Porsche brakes much better. Note that our cars has similar weight!

I just can´t imagine how fast is my favorite 996 GT3RS, which should be much faster than the 996TT X50.

Chipped RS4 v 996 Turbo

I had aburn with a 996 turbo recently around the Braintree bypass in Essex. I missed thrid gear and it came past me very quickly. To my surprise he couldn't make any ground away from me right up to 120 when he lost his bottle, slowed and pulled over. I also had two others in the car egging me on and the extra weight will have made a difference.
My conclusion is there is very little in it straight line. Haveing just sold a 996 C4 for my audi RS 4, i'm sorry to say that on a twisty bit of road there would be no chance of keeping up with a 996. it handles far better.

All the best

Here we go........ :D

As has been said it comes down to a number of things, power to weight, aero-dynamics, driver (big b***s and all) but all this can be put aside on the right track, or road for that matter.

Two identical drivers on a track, if the gearing is not set (which most cars won't be) the RS4 can be quicker than the 996 just because the driver doesn't have to change or use the gears so often.

It's no point bouncing the engine off the limiter 75yds before having to brake for a corner, and but the same token it no point changing up just to have to change down and hit the brakes big time.

Most circuits you won't see more than 130mph and if you do its only for a very short time. Castle Coombe is one of the fast ones and you can see nearly 150mph but then its hard on the brakes and try to get set up for the next two corners.

The final answer has to be, yes in some hands on some roads the RS4 will beat a 996, but on the same ground don't be surprised to see the Porsche go past your RS4. It comes down to road / track, driver ability, who pays the bills (tyres, brakes & bodywork).

The RS4 has always been a very quick car, if the question comes up in the pub answer, 'Yes probally, but only just - and after all the RS4 has 4 proper seats and can get the dog in the boot - and is half the price' etc, etc, etc..........

R. :redrs4:
