Just let the pictures speek for itself

didnt seem to work

Ok what you did seems to be ok, to check the "preview my post and/or attach file" box

then browse to select file

this is then displayed as an attachemnt, however you attachment doesnt seem to work, maybe check the file size, i think it should be less than 100kb

once you view your post, click the link to the attachment, copy the url for the file

go back to your post and edit it, inserting an image where the image is the url you copied above

edit your post

then select the image instant UBB short cuts at the bottom of the page

insert the url of the image

and it should display
