My standard disks got blued after the last track day, even though I did a no-brakes cooling down lap.

Does this happen to quattro gmbh brake disks as well?

Any way to stop it?

Yeah dont track your car if you got standard brakes, and the Gmbh will do the same, look at AP, Porsche, MoVit, they wont go blue but they may warp

A quick question from a track day newbie. When you say blue, they are actually blue ??? Are the rotors now stuffed ??

It's a common problem... The brakes just aren't up to serious track days. The disks (rotors) discolour to blue, but in my experience they soon go back to silver again.

My disks will be shot in about 10-12 months... I'm thinking AP Racing.

I have the GmbH's on mine and they are fine [img]images/graemlins/bluegrab.gif[/img], just the yellow plastic melts and they get black! [img]images/graemlins/biggrin3.gif[/img]

In the old RS4.org Forum there was a very intersting thread from Carl concerning better brake cooling with some cheap, slightly modified VW Phaeton parts. Can we have that information again please?

Sure I understand that. But what does "better brakes" mean? Ventilated and drilled disks seem not to be enough. Better calipers will only make them heat up more because they clamp harder.

What I would like is a clip-on ducting system to use for track days only. Anyone fancy making some?

If you warped them as well then Audi change them under warranty - you cannot change discs without pads so you get a new set of pads as well FOC

What we need are a couple of profiled carbon fibre 'plates' that bolt on with the wheel and stand proud of the wheel like rally cars used to have - Lancia Delta Integrale. That should prevent the brakes from overheating.

I'm in the market for a couple if anyone is keen to make some. I would fit them for track days.

I've been having a good old think about this subject recently and i'm sure that we are doomed to failure regarding brake upgrades with Audis due to front wheel/front bumper air ducting design. I have an S3, and I now have the Porsche 993 TT calipers/discs but I'm sure that i'll still warp these discs again due to the problem of not enough sufficient sudden cooling due to location of calipers inside front wheels/hot air running off the intercoolers/track day driving style! and wheel design (porsche wheels direct air directly onto the caliper area IIRC)

I've discussed this with an old engineer friend of my father, and he's suggested making some plastic ducting that runs from behind the intercooler feeding directly pointing to the brakes at an angle... [img]images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

also, I thought a slight 'Blue-ness' of the discs was OK (disc was heated up ok etc) compared to an orange colour!! maybe just me!!

Better quality discs with cast in holes and a wider gap between surfaces for cooling should be an improvement, as are more pistons in the caliper (to even the force from pad to disc) and a bigger pad surface area.

To get all this you would need to upgrade. Mov-it 380's ?


I don't see you being able to transfer enough heat out of the standard system with any cooling add on's. sorry.
