best to launch at around 5500 rpm sidestepping the clutch... hard to tell at what revs you should change the gear... you have to feel it [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

That's how Max Power brigade would do it. Just think of the strain on the drive train.
Any sensible RS4 owner would let it edge forward and then floor it.

when you talk about 1/4 mile racing there is no time to floor it after a sensible start... it takes only about 13 seconds, floor it from the beginning or you lose...

I've got far to much mechanical sympathy to do this to my car!
I read a cracker of an article in top gears mag a couple months back. They were on about the time they first tried the RS2 in a 0-60 sprint. They talked to some Audi official who apparently talked to Audi's engineers. Who apparently replied, "hold revs to 5500 (or something like that) and drop the clutch!!! [img]images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img].
The top gear lad is supposed to have said, "you're kidding...right?"
The reply was, "They are german - they don't joke about these things!!"
And so they followed their advise.
The bang from launch was stomach churning but she went Ooo how she went.
I laughed and winced at the same time on reading that. [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

If you have the drive train improved then you could quite possibly lunch at 5500 [img]images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img], but not recommended in a standard car" Phew is that my clutch that just Vapourised"

I have tried this a couple of times - the last was against a Sierra Cosworth!
Broadly I would suggest the technique set out here which is dial in about 5-5,500 rpm and then simply dump the clutch..........oh and then hang on.
I DO have mechanical sympathy BUT mine is a company car. I wouldn't like to try it too often though.

Ok, since I never wrote anything about my "experiences" with my RS4 (with Sportec remap - 420hp) I will share with you guys what happened so far:
First time there was the brand new M3 (343hp) both in cabrio and standard version. I launched at around 4000rpm and within 1-2 seconds the BMW was about a car length behind. Changed gears close to redline - around 6800rpm. Between 2nd and 3rd gear the BMW seemed to come a little closer, but this could be because it has an 8000rpm redline, but when I got into 4th gear he was about 2-3 carlengths behind and the distance between us was increasing. (Thanks to the turbo Gods!) Anyway, the cabrio was even worse (probably due to the heavier weight).
Second run was agains a Subaru Impreza STI - unmodded. (Must mention that my tires had 32000KM on them - so they were pretty worn out)
Launched around 5000rpm - jumped about half a car length in front of him. 2nd gear also felt strong as I was pulling away from him but when I hit 3rd gear the difference was clear - he fell behind about 3-4 car lengths - and we stopped.
Then last night - the big surprise - brand new, 5000KM 2003 SL55 AMG (the real [censored]). I was 100% positive that he'll beat me very badly... I even told him that I don't expect my car to be faster than his (due in part to an article I read on the net about a comparison between SL55 AMG, Lambo Murcielago and some other fast cars... and it said that SL55AMG is faster from 0-300kph than the Lambo... it has more torque and lesser weight than the Lambo). So I was sure that he'll leave me in the dust... Anyway, so we line up for the start (btw, we have no track race conditions here so the only time we can race is during the night on an (relatively empty) street - makes adrenaline rush be more intense when the cops come and we have to run [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] hehe
Anyway - so we're all lined up at the start. My heartbeat was intense - maybe an understatement - but I said I'll give it all I can - so I held the revs at 6000 or 6500, i don't remember, and released the clutch (didn't sidestep). This time I had 4 brand-new Michelin PS2's ready to eat that road... I felt some wheel spin but the launch was extraordinary - I jumped ahead of the Merc about half a carlength. In 2nd gear he started to come closer.. difference was about 1/4 carlength but he didn't come any closer... we had to stop at around 210kph as we ran out of road, but I was still a little ahead of him. I'm pretty sure that if we would've continued further he would've overtaken me as his engine is much bigger... but up to 210hph I was ahead [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
We tried this 3 times as the guy couldn't believe it... he said "Ok let's try it on Sport this time - as I was on the Winter setting"... so we tried it again and this time the same thing happened. (btw, the Merc was a cabrio) Then he said to try it one last time and he put the top on the car to be more aerodynamic (that's what he said) - this time he "jumped" the start a split-second earlier than me so when I launched I was maybe 1/4 carlenght behind him and the distance maintained to the end. I was so surprised myself, nevermind the owner of the Merc... I was so sure he'll "destroy" me... 500hp V8 kompressor 5.5 litter engine ..and that on 1900KGS.. I expected much more to happen....
Those were my "wins"... but I do have 1 defeat: against a... 1996 Porche 911 turbo modded - 460hp.
Again, even before the start I was positive he'll break me in half... so to keep is short, I launched around 5000rpm and... to my surprise... went about half carlength ahead of the porsche through the end of the 2nd gear I was still ahead (though the distance was closing) - however in 3rd gear he overtook me and went about 2 carlengths ahead of me. I wasn't too surprised - maybe if his car wasn't modded (standard is 408bhp) I would've stood a chance. Oh well, it's still an outstanding portfolio for a lightly tunned RS4...
The only thing I feel really bad about is that we didn't make movies of all those races... but hopefully next time I'll make some and post it here.

Have fun guys... (btw, those races were not all on the same day...) Oh, any idea if it's worth getting a "stronger" clutch? We don't have "Track days" here unfortunately so all my racing is limited to occasional street racing or among friends - like last night. When this clutch breaks is it worth getting a "sport" one or should I stick with the original?
