Porsche 993 turbo

Post by Ernie » Sat Apr 12, 2003 6:51 pm

Have a remapped RS4 (430bhp) and test drove a 993 turbo today.

Porsche felt faster and I am quite tempted as prices have now become close to RS4.

Two points:

1) Does anyone have any views on switching from RS4 to 993 turbo (estate/kids/dogs not really an issue).

2) Anyone out there potentially interested in my car?

Hope to hear from someone soon.

1) Porsche is the only real alternative to the Audi.
2) Post some specs.
oh and 3) Welcome!

My car as follows:

Misano red
20k miles
Sunroof
Nav sat / CD changer
Hardened wheels & new tyres fitted 4 weeks ago
AMD remap (430 bhp)
GMBH suspension and brakes (f/r)
Short shift
Spare wheel
Bought last July from Aylesbury Audi
Pretty immaculate - I love the car but just fancy a change until I need a fast estate one day.

Not sure what the price would be - open to (sensible) offers.

Let me know if 'you' is interested and if anyone out there has a 993T for sale......

Thanks,

E

Ernie
Great minds think alike! After the 4 it was the only car I still got excited about (without spending 996 TT prices). And yes having owned a number of 911's they really do make your heart beat faster than an Audi of any specification (bar the le-mans car maybe )
Have a look at this lot http://www.911virgin.com/, Henry who runs the show is a cantancerous and opinionated git, but really is passionate about Porsches, and his brother Tom is sweetness personified. They bought my last 993 and they are a pleasure to deal with.

I can't see any 993's available, but they do get them in quite often, I test drove one last summer.

If you don't mind paying top $ have a look at http://www.paragon.gb.com/sales/default.asp, they have a good reputation, but they buy low and sell high, so be aware.

Tip of the day if are serious about buying a Porsche, get yourself down to the newagent and buy a copy of 911 & Porsche World. It still gets my juices flowing even if I can't now afford to buy a tyre for a 993
Current: B7 RS4 Avant in Sprint
and 3.00 TDi Allroad (AMD Chipped to 280BHP but don't tell my wife!)
Previously:
2 x B5 RS4's in various states of tune from standard (no.93 out of the factory) to 480 BHP and 1 x early B7 RS4

"993 the last series of driver's cars. 996 diluted/bourgeois,"

Yada yada yada
And the old Mini is still better than the new one
Yada yada yada

FWIW I seriously considered a 993T and believe me it IS NOT a better drivers car.
It will give you the impression it is "more" of a drivers car during everyday use because it is nowhere near as refined as the 996TT under "normal" driving conditions.

Unfortunately, these are the only conditions 99.9% of people will ever have the opportunity to compare the two cars under.
Therefore this sort of BS becomes "fact", because the 993T feels much edgier etc. under normal road conditions so therefore *must* be the better driver's car...right?

Take the 996TT to a track and I will guarantee you will change your mind...big time

I was one week away from doing a deal on a RUF 993T when AFN invited me down to Chobam to drive a 996TT on the track there with Dickie Attwood, and I'm really glad I did.

I've now tracked my 996TT 3 times and believe me it's awesome and every bit as good and in many ways better than the 993T.

I write in agreement with Charles - I've had various 911s including a 993 turbo 4. If it wasn't for the arrival of a very large mutt and the Mrs's need to carry medical supplies around the country (but it is, so I'm not...!) I'd trade the RS4 like a shot (sorry guys...!) for the best, latest, lowest mileage example 993 T4 I could find. Don't get me wrong, my (wife's and dog's!) RS4 is brilliant, but a 993 is something else - it feels (and is) quicker, handles and 'feels' better, would be just as reliable and probably wouldn't cost much more to maintain. The only negative was that I personally didn't like the 'push-me-pull-you' sensation from the 4wd system (which is absent in the 996 turbo and for that matter the RS4). Do be careful though - bear in mind that pre-996 911's are the probably the easiest cars in the world to clock so take low mileages with a pinch of salt - get it checked by a dealer first!. Depends what you want it for, but I'd have a look at the 993 RS too, if you can find a nice one that hasn't been crashed.

Me again - just saw alan's post - and of course he's right - to a point. The 993 t4 is severely compromised as a track car - way more so than a 996 - and a 996 is indeed a better everyday road car. For 50k more it had darn well better be! But as an everyday runaround/RS4 alternative at similar money a 993 t4 is very compelling.
Each to his own of course, but in my experience if it's track day fun you want, a 2wd 993 - preferably an RS or GT2 - is the way to go - a lot more challenging, they certainly taught an amateur like me a great deal more about car control etc than the 996 ever could.
It's an irrelevance to note also of course that you could probably buy a LHD 993 RS AND an RS4 with change from the price of a 996tt... All a matter of personal preference!

I was of course leaving out the "value for money" angle, I wouldn't even dream of disagreeing on that front

I wasn't just reacting as a 996 owner, I really did get very close to the 993T and would be happy with one tomorrow, it's just that I hear so much of this totally incorrect argument I have to point out the facts otherwise everyone gets the wrong

The other thing is, the 996TT gets constantly knocked for it's cost (although the base price was £20k cheaper than a 360M when I bought mine and it's a much better car) have you all forgotten how much a 993T was new?
They weren't exactly cheap you know!

I'd also agree with Gord, if it's pure track thrills you want find an RS or get a GT2

Alan - If I remember rightly the 993 t4 cost me over 100k - back in 1996! AND I could have sold it on straight away for a premium (but didn't - doh!) What's a new one now - less than 90 I think?
By the way, was it the original RUF 993 turbo you tried? I think it was called a 'yellowbird'. RUF (bravely) once let me have a go in their demo while they were sorting my GT2 - truly amazing - race cars apart it was the only car I've been in which made the GT2 seem slow. I seem to recall it was based on a de-seamed, narrow-bodied C2 - so weighed about the same as a fag packet - and had 550hp - through the back wheels - and a superb 'plumbed-in' roll cage. Wild!

It seems that I am completely in line with Gord and Alan.
If money were no object here, the 996T would be my preffered every day steer, but as a replacement for the RS4 in terms of cash, without the need for the added practicality of the 4, the 993TT would make a wonderful alternative.

I seem to remember that Gemballa did some fairly monstrous things to a 993 engine in a slim bodied 911 that took it beyond 650BHP and cracked the 240MPH mark a few years ago. That might have put the frighteners on the Yellow-Bird,

Gord Did you use the RUF guys when they were down in Chertsey?

Gord,
If it had been an original "Yellowbird" I would be driving it now I think

No, it was a 450bhp RUF conversion to a std 993T4, purely engine work, no suspension tweaks etc.

List price for a 996TT (when I ordered) was £86500, mine OTR was £103k with all the bits and pieces, that was kinda my point, the 996TT is no more expensive new than the 993T4 was new, and is a far superior car.

Of course comparing a 4-5 year-old 993T4 with a new 996TT on price is no contest

Charles, I thought you'd always agreed with me
