dull repetitive noise when on the move...

Hi there

I've an X reg B5 RS4. Experiencing a slight dull repetitive noise which I suspected relate to my wheels or tyres in some way, as the noise appears 'rotational' in that it speeds up and slows down with the car. This is not a ticking noise (so I don't think cam related?), more like a dull thud - I had thought there was a car beside me with an audible bass like beat when I first noticed it. Initially barely noticeable, I think it may have become slightly more pronounced over the last week or so. Sounds to me like it's coming from the rear of the car - possibly left hand side.

I think I've checked the two most obvious potential sources - tyres are clear of any foreign bodies in the tread, and wheels are all firmly bolted...

Just thought I'd check in to see if anyone's had any similar issues, or whether there's something blatantly obvious that I've not thought of (quite possible).

Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ciaran

My car has the same noise but it comes from the passenger seat. If find diamonds make the noise stop.

I don't think it's his wife at all. They generally make a tinnier noise. Mine on the other hand...

She won't entertain marriage, thinks weddings cost too much. One of the things I like about her, that...
Thanks MikeFish, will look into bearings / drive shaft.

I'm just guessing and have limited knowledge in these matters though. Thought somebody else that knows a bit more might have chipped in by know to either say yes it could be or no don't waste your time.

also worth considering the prop shaft and diff. although you said it sounds to be coming from one side it is probably hard to determine when driving.

Have you checked the rear pads or possibly sticking rear caliper?
