I've just bought an RS4

Post by FatBoy » Sat Jan 18, 2003 2:04 pm

After handing over my lovely RS6 yesterday, I was feeling somewhat dispondant. However, that was short lived because I've just bought myself a nice shiney black RS4. It's in absolutely mint condition with only 2,700 miles on the clock and silver napa leather interior (just to remind me of my RS6 ).
The only negative with it is that the original owner had the alloy mirrors deleted. A bit of a long shot, but does anyone have or know where I can get some alloy mirrors at a sensible price ?
The car is in a totally standard state. Having saved myself £20k on the RS6, what should be on the top of my list for mods ?
Having only had a short test drive, my immediate impression is that it feels much lighter than the RS6, but it doesn't have the instantaneous and totally effortless "grunt" that the RS6 has. However, I suspect that with a little time, it might ultimately prove to be the more rewarding to drive.
It is being delivered later next week, so I'll post some piccies when it arrives.
Cheers
Paul
BTW if anyone else is looking for a RS4, Iain has a very nice, well spec'd. example for sale at what I beleive is a very fair price.

Congratulations

I think before we talk mods, what's your budget?

You can get mirrors from VAG Parts. I had a similar problem, and went for the electrically folding setup. This is integrated with my after-amrket alarm so that they fold on arm and unfold on disarm.

Hi Phil,
I don't necessarily want more power yet, I'd like to get a handle on the standard setup first. Otherwise I won't appreciate the upgrade. I was really thinking about suspension, gear change i.e. Tanoga etc.
As for budget, may sound daft, but I don't really know. It's a long time since I've modified a car in any way.

I've just bought an RS4 too. Black, almost 11k miles and in beautiful condition too. Picked it up on Tuesday and love every minute behind the wheel. Interestingly, with black mirrors too, but I quite like it that way.

Only thing I've found I don't like is the Auto Dipping Rear View Mirror. I'm sure cars behind can be made to disappear with much more fun using the right foot. I am told there's a sensor that can be disabled with a very small piece of tape. Anyone done that?

...Paul.

I was really thinking about suspension, gear change i.e. Tanoga etc.

I'm working on a some new mods for the RS4. I have a GmbH kit (not fitted) which is being used to see if it is possible to have a switchable Koni based kit made. The GmbH kit comprises of 4 springs, 4 dampers, and an antiroll bar. This is the most popular option for this area, but they can be tricky to get hold of.

As for the shifter. I have the Tanoga, and it is great. I hear that if you can get to Luton, there may be someone there who could fit it for you . I had mine fitted by my dealer, but it's worth getting it done by someone who knows how.

Currently I think AmD are best suited to provide a full package for modifications, and therefore a good place to get an idea of costs. They are listed here.

Interesting about the auto-dimming mirror.. I quite like it.. gives the effect of looking through sun glasses.. just takes the glare out of the lights behind...

not that there is much behind me ever.. don't you always find your backing off???

Thanks guys for the encouragement
I can see that this is going to take on a whole life of its own and I haven't even taken delivery yet.
Re. the suspension John, I may well be interested. What is it, what does it do (for the handling !!), is it a DIY install?
Cheers

Welcome to the club.
Re auto dip mirror, if you take a look at it in the middle just under the glass you should see a little hole that i believe holds the sensor you refer to, although i have not blanked this off in my car as i quite like this feature.
