the RS4 we have, its anchors are more than up to stopping the car safely, perhaps its because it has new discs and pads all round so "feel" sufficient... however one wee thing intregues me, IF this upgrade is not all for track use then you guys must REALLY be giving it some welly to require RS6 brakes to be fitted. The first post to this thread starts off by saying" i nearly ran out of road"...in an RS4????? WHAT are you doing!!!!!

I can see why you need bigger brakes after my trip round Donnington with DavidT but for normal driving isnt this an o.t.t. extravagance or am I missing something here? :bash:

I like it very much, but so I like the brakes! :) I know that the B5 RS4 brakes fit, maybe I have to use them... :(

I know that my stock set up faded big time and moaned and groaned even with new stock pads if you braked from say 120mph to 20mph in one go and that wasn't being mad on the braking, nothing that would induce ABS just a good application of brake from high speed and ceratinly nothing like I would apply if I was on a track. If I did that in a row more than a couple of times and the brakes were seriously not happy to the point you wondered if they were going to work next time! I've not had that problem with the RS6 set-up and when I was testing them I was WAY harder than I have ever been and I did this for numerious quick successive applications - not a peap or decay in performance. :)

That's good to hear. I've not noticed any significant braking improvement on mine as yet, but then again I'm still bedding/running them in so not really got to the point where I've really stood on them from any serious speed yet.

Have to say, I'd be very interested to hear from others if I should have a really solid/stiff pedal or not - pedal still feels a little spongy to me (and having driven the RX8 the other day for the first time in a wee while it really brought it home how 'sloppy' the feel in the RS4 is - the RX's pedal is solid and the brakes are pin sharp - granted the car's a lot lighter but still, the difference is a little too much for my liking - does anyone run braided lines?)

The RS4 has "Mans Brakes". Loads of feel and able to apply steady and increasing pressure to get the desired braking effect. Personally, I feel too many cars are over-braked nowadays.

You will notice the real difference when you have to do consecutive stops from speed e.g. on a track or fast dual carriageway with loads of roundabouts.

"fast dual carrageways with roundabouts" do you live in Milton Keynes then?? isnt that 60 mph speed limit anyway?

YEP...I AM definately missing out on something here :boohoo:

MK...no way pedro.

It was suggested as a means of testing the braking abilities of a car at legal speeds on the Queens highway. Unless (like some) you have you own private drive or runway where you can do 180mph and then hit the brakes.

Mind you, I once owned an Alfa 155 (it was the 2½litre V6.....) and that did suffer brake fade on the MK roundabouts once!

Air does tend to get trapped in the top of the brembo 8-pots after they have been fitted and bled correctly - undo the top bleed valve slowly and you should see it bubbling. Mine were like this and I've read reports of others having the same issue. Completely different afterwards - there is no comparison with std brakes.

My RS6/B7 RS4 set up has nicely bedded in now and it feels so much more secure than stock. It used to rumble if stopping quickly from 80mph+, but now it just stops. No drama and very smooth. Well worth the upgrade in my opinion.

The rear brakes make only a small contribution to the braking effect. When you brake, all weight is transferred forward, hence larger front brakes. Larger rear brakes may give more stability but not much else.

Blackb1ade i am with you on this one i am as yet not that impressed with the new brake set up ive done 1500 miles on them now so they should be bedded in. Like yours the pedal is spongy but i also get a vibration through the pedal and steering wheel and a feeling through the pedal like they are running metal to metal, like a gritty feeling. Has anyone else felt this or can anyone give me some pointers on what it might be because i am a little p155ed off to say the least. I was thinking it could have something to do with my rears because they look a little worse for wear but they wouldnt cause vibration through the steering wheel would they?I test drove an M3 a little while back and the brakes on that were phenomenal which i thought i would get with these 8 pots but thus far they are <beep>.

Exactly as I do!

Have to say it's not so prevalent as to annoy me, in fact, in a perverse sort of way I almost like it because it gives me a little feedback at least - as in I can feel the pad against the disc (although it's only noticeable under very gentle braking)
Under heavy braking they do feel nice with a good strong bite and now they've been properly bedded in they've improved a lot. [I'm not getting any vibration through the column though, must be unrelated - as my rear brakes are - to put it technically - 'completely f***ed'] I have noticed some very small evidence of pad residue, minimal though and what with the blueing of the discs - although I do think that'll dissappear if I ever get around to driving it normally for more than 20 miles.....

Funny you mention that - I've driven a few fast cars over the years and I have to say, as a stock machine (hell, even modified!) the M3 (02 onwards model) has the BEST brakes I have ever used/felt by a fair margin - phenomenally good.

Wonder whether the vibration is due to worn bearings or joints in the suspension somewhere, rather than the actual brakes?
