Nice one Phil , sensible. Great car plenty modding still to do.
The price is what your willing to sell for and others are willing to pay.

I don't see any "dilemma" there.

Absolutely . Honest truth is, I don't want to risk getting rid of the RS4 and moving into something that I potentially wouldn't suit me like the RS4 does. Give it a few months and maybe I may be able to afford a little toy as a second car.
Nice one Phil , sensible. Great car plenty modding still to do.
Actually, I don't feel there is much more to do to the RS4 that would improve it for my use. It is a competent road and track estate car. I have considered the following, but they all have downsides:

Lighten the RS4 - Loss of comfort and style
Bigger turbos and engine enhancements - Does it really need more power, especially when I consider that I've got the car to a point where the deliver of power suits the fly-by-wire cornering issues.
Better brakes - AP kit seems to be causing vibration, but have yet to rule out worn components such as wheel bearings and top suspension links.

I bought the RS4 when I was 27, and it replace my tuned S2 Coupe. The reason for buying the RS4 was that I spent too much money on trying to make the S2 comparable or better than an RS2. High insurance premiums and reliability issues made me take the plunge into the RS4, £50k on a car at 27 yrs old isn't the cleverest things I ever did. If I'd have bought a house I could have £100k to £150k in my pocket now, but the joy of owning such a fabulous car over the past few years has been worth every penny.

If you want an RS4, buy one. Get an inspection done and if it seems OK it's still going to cost you to maintain, and possibly enhance. Want to know what an RS4 is worth, take a look at AutoTrader....

Flippin heck  Must mean mine is worth about £18k......... that hurts..much like Phil, I paid full list price, got no extras free and used it every day for three years. But compared to other prestige makes, it has not lost anything like the %age. Infact in %age terms, it has lost less in five years than a Merc or Bmw would in three

Extras and mods are like a decorated and undecorated house. In most instances it won't increase the price by much, but will increase the chances of sale.

Remember the costly options on an RS4 are way out of date now anyway. The cost of getting a car to excellent condition is tops about £2000 (Paint job, wax, replace some items). Pay £20k for what seems to be an honest fair condition car, or £28k for one that is 'immaculate' but full of filler (Not saying yours is Scotty!!). Most would prefer to take the risk with the lower priced option.

From the list of RS4s, here the one that most closely matches your quote:

2001 AUDI RS4 AVANT RS4 Quattro 5dr Avant, 41,000 miles, SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD2001 just 41000 miles y reg, THIS CARS GOT EVERY FACTORY EXTRA, YOU WONT FIND BETTER! full black leather interior, electric sunroof, tv/sat nav, xenon . . . . (private) £ 26,500

£26.5k, sold, "every extra".... Does that mean it was in poor condition (Private Poor £ 23885) and someone felt the additional £2.5k was worth it for the extras? I think not.

The more I think of it, the more I think it's just that there are a lot of bad ones out there. The right buyer will pay the right price for the right car.

Mine's is still worthto me; the £50k I paid for it, the money I have spent, and all the memories and friendships along the way..... Priceless, therefore it ain't going nowhere (unless I'm in a possition where it must go).

Whilst i was looking i done a comparison, WOW i cant believe the difference in value's no wonder it's hard to make the transition from S4 to RS4 and prices are questioned you would have to ask yourself is it worth it.

I dont think a b5 rs4 is a bad place to have your money at all,ive kept an eye on m3 prices which i was close to buying and yes the rs4 has done very well in comparison and will continue to.In fact i dont think there is a much better place for your money.
I changed a top suspension mount on mine recently after finding a little play in the ball joint,no signs it had gone though driving it,i was actually trying to find something gone on the rears as it doesnt feel right when you hit bumps while cornering, feels more like its buckling under than damping it out, oops off topic sorry
I see from the brake check thread that there are some rotters out there at the bottom end of the price range

Some of you may know that I've been toying with getting a CSL. Recent changes have meant that financially I would now need to part with my RS4 and stump up the difference.... So here goes:

2001 Avus RS4 Piano Varnish
98000 miles
Full Audi Service History
1 Owner (Me)
New engine and turbos under waranty @ 55k miles
GmbH bucket seats and originals
DVD, TV, CD, Sat Nav, Dolby 5.1
Improvements in the right places
Spare set of rims with Dunlop Track rubber
RS4 Number Plate

Realistically it has three values:

- Trade in sub £20k
- Put back to standard ~ £20k mark, and sell bits ~ £4000
- Bought and respected as is ~ £20k to £25k

So the bottom line is really that it's not worth me parting with it at these values, I'm gonna have to keep it forever :) :) :)
Is yours really worth under 20k trade-in? That's quite scary.

Mines done 74k and is about due all the belts and couple of other bits (rear brakes...) so I'm toying with the idea of a change. Next week was going to be about finding out what I can get for it (not sure I can really be hassled with a private sale so looking to sell to someone like Fontain), but I was hoping for a little more than that.

As you say though Phill, it's not the first time I've thought of changing and realised there's nothing else to replace it with so no doubt I'll stop being foolish in a week or so and decide to keep it. My other option at the moment is to share a car with the other half and get and Exige for the weekends (we both have a lusting for one). Sat in a couple yesterday at the motorshow and I've gotta test drive one to see what they're really like.

It's so sad to hear that there are some out there in really poor condition full of filler but I guess you get that for cars from 50 to 50k - you'd hope it's pretty rare at the top end!

Well i got a bargain, got my barracuda stress for 189.00 brand new i think! Mind you, i would call it poor condition as i recently re-sprayed a different colour. Got extras though! Anyway...think i'm going off topic!

Have to say, that's one of the reasons I found it hard to let mine go...had some awesome times in the car on trips with RS246 (one of the best for me was 2 weeks after getting the car heading to LeMans in convoy with 7 or so other RS4's - simply amazing)

Those memories aren't attached to the car though..I still have them with me and have created more since changing cars...with a lot of the same people too !

The memories you hold are from the times you had and the people you were with...not just the car.

Have met some great friends through this site...at some stage most people will change their cars (for whatever reason). I think it's a great sign that a lot of people who have changed still go on trips etc...

Cars will lose value...of that you can be pretty certain. Even if you box your car up, continually clean it, and don't use it it will still depreciate...

I truly believe I got great value out of my car...It helped me meet a great bunch of people, create some great memories and I used it properly.

Get out and use your car...take it on a trackday, go to the meets, come on a trip..I've yet to meet anyone who hasn't thoroughly enjoyed it....You'll meet some great people and increase the 'value' you've had from the car.

Sniff,sniff...I need a tissue!
