This is a bit worrying! Are you saying that you were supplied with a key, off the shelf, which wasn't programmed to the car (and the car not programmed to the key?), and the remote on that key could unlock your car?

Ken,

You're probably not at risk living in Essex if you don't have a Max Power sticker in the window!

Hi Steve

My condolences to you Andy and all your family.

When my RS4 arrived back in 2000, I had my garage added to my house security system, with various added security features and a large alarm box with flashing lights and siren evident on the outside. I also fitted slip bolts to the inside of the garage doors. I have always kept only one set of keys 'available' for each car that I own and these are taken to the bedroom at night.

Just before parting with my 4 I also investigated and found 2 or 3 companies who offer a remote shutdown facility for any electrical components of the car similar to one previously mentioned. These are combined with tracker devices and tend to be activated via a secure web site or via the phone (they are linked to a GSM network)and are the only complete answer to the problem, since you can wait until the car and thieves are far enough away before switching the fuel pump or whatever off.

I also have a large dog and have a couple of extra 'final chapter' solutions for these types as they leave my premises, but would always just give them the keys and let them go away, that's what insurance is for.

No, I forgot to give them one of the original flip keys. They programmed the other flip key and the spare key.

So it wasn't until I took the spare flip key one day to start the car that I realised they hadn't programmed the key for starting the car. However, it would appear that the remote for unlocking the car was still able to open and close the car but not start it?

Why, oh why is this happening... It's not like a Green RS4 is common!!

Chin up Andy, hope it all works out.

Got my letter today, sent on the 14th April, but it did go via Northern Ireland :boots:

I also had my existing and replacement keys reprogrammed, only to find the original key which was thought stolen. The original key will open the doors but not start the car, apparently, the remote codes are not changed, only the imobiliser--------

Interesting
Just had a call from insurance company, who obviously have had the same letter.......seems they now want Tracker Monitor fitted, the Retrieve system is no longer acceptable to them, and they won't cover the car in the case of theft until I can supply certificate and contract :bash: :bash: :bash:
So the £299 I spent will go in the bin, and have to pay out £459 to get the new system fitted, seems they want their cake and eat it as they are not contributing anything, or offering discount for its fittment  :ban:

i have just noticed this on ebay :bash:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... gory=15329

yes its a key ! but look at the last couple of lines of his description he will give a link to how to get it recoded !??! (can you code your own key with your own car like old style immobilisers ?!)

but the key needs re-cutting aswell to be able to turn your ignition barrell ? does it not ??

i thought only main dealers could get keys re-coded, i understand any auto locksmith can cut you a key but not recode ?!?

if is is the case i think the way they stole this car was quite simple but i wont write it out on here.

correct me if i am very wrong, its expected !

Appearently the key coding requires the SKC (Secret Key Code) which is only available from Audi by request..... If the theives have managed to get the SKC, then that should have been logged by Audi/VW.

They cannont impose terms to your policy mid term if it will cost you more money, they have to wait to renewal. Just ring up and ask to speak to their GISC (governing body) complaints officer, you will find they change their tune. If you want more advice ring me.

i was not happy that when i unlocked my car with the key the alarm was turned off,so anybody with a screwdriver may have a chance to not only unlock the car but also turn the alarm off at the same time.
as the factory alarm only seems to be fitted with an interior sensor no outside abuse would trigger the alarm(no shock or tilt sensors).i had the audi technition cut a wire feed to the alarm so that if locking the car with the key the alarm sets and if unlocked with the key the alarm stayes armed.the only way to disarm the alarm is with the remote.the alternative which phil used is to change the drivers door handle to a keyles one(rear door handle).
the remote and immobiliser are different systems.the remote turns the alarm on and off and remotes can easily be tuned in or removed to the alarm system.the immobiliser is the chip built in the key which has to match the reciever in the clocks and as far as i am aware can only be tuned in with the codes from audi germany.the key can be seperated into these three parts.remote fob, chip and metal key.i dont think audi can cut a key they will just order one for you if you can supply the chassis no from germany.the other bits they can tune are kept on the shelf.

its illegal here but with different laws in south africa there is no need to kill the car power as instead you can have a can of cs gas fitted which can be activated by gsm,or flame throwers fitted to the underside of the car for uninvited threats. :D
