Cheers Nige

So, due to corrosion then, I'm guessing we'll need to set ourselves an interval for their replacement...

When I visited APS last year for the first time they showed me a B5 RS4 with a bad case of corrosion around the oil cooler unions and checked mine while it was there and it was OK.
They said due to the position of the cooler it gets covered in salt etc and after 7 years this can become bad enough to cause leaks.
I promptly WD40d mine.
I wonder if the low mileage of kellyrs4's car was to blame? Infrequent usage over the winter etc would have allowed the damp to get a hold between warm up cycles, just a thought..
I'd get cooler replaced, fill up with oil and see what happens.
Good luck!

It's best to do this with the bumper off, just incase for the worst case scenario.

Mine was seized on aswell, and came off eventually but damaged the threads on the cooler! Luckily with a thread file, all was back to normal, and some PTFE tape with the new pipe, has been sound till today!

In the time I've been on here, it definitely seems to be a common issue, especially at this time/age of the car's life

My car is now with Doug and Lucas at MRC , a provisional ' quick ' look and listen did not reveal anything too disturbing . The cam covers are being removed next week for an inspection , which should be a first indication of any trouble .

The audi dealers last action was to give me a £1000 bill for a new oil cooler , which I'd previously been told was only temporary and could be removed ( ie what was the point of a new part when the car was a write off )
I did say it was probably not a good idea to bring a car which was out of warranty to them and they agreed .

sorry to sound bitter . but great car ( this is my 5th turbo quattro ) rubbish company .

big thanks to all for suggestions and help

You lucky begger!
Just changed the cooler pipe on my customers RS4, it was knackered. I spotted it and advised replacment, I didn't even know it was a common issue. Just shows what a proper service can save. If you have to remove the cooler to sort the damaged threads its a sod! I changed the cooler connection for one I had from a damaged car we have.
Very glad your engine is in good health!

So the upshot of this is that your oil light came on whilst driving, when you lost some oil due to an oil cooler pipe being broken.

You then took it to Audi, and they diagnosed a new engine was needed, (presumably the technician must have created some evidence to substantiate this position and convince you off this. Perhaps you have some diagnostic printout or other evidence still?)

You then sought a second opinion and the conclusion is that nothing was damaged, and you are back on the road after the pipe was replaced and it has been serviced. The car now runs better than before.

So to the Audi network ....:audibash:

Yes TopBear that is right

the diagnosis that Audi gave me was all based of what they could ' hear ' from the engine at various different revs .
No diagnostic read outs were presented and they were unable to find the offending oil cooler hose .
I was told there was certainly variable cam chain wear due to this loss of oil and also the turbos had excessive noise after
hi revs . It was also explained to me that I could have the pistons coming through the bonnet driving down the motorway . their only suggestion other than change the engine was to take it to the car auctions and let the buyer beware .

I will not be taking my car to an Audi main dealer again . that's not a surprise is it ?

These really are fabulous cars , it's a pity that Audi don't share our opinions .

my car will never be going to a main dealers . i would only let an enthusiast who knows the cars inside out touch it. not being funny but if you leave it at the dealers you might at worst get the yts trainee student working on it or at best someone with half an ounce of sense and experience on it. not synical or owt 2p :audibash:

Glad you got your car back. You should name and shame the dealer, advice like that is appalling, verging on the criminal. If you had have gone ahead and got them to put a new engine in and it wasn't required, then isn't there a law againt that. I'd write to the director of the franchise and trading standards.

Some 'Specialists' let get their £7ph young staff to work on S/RS cars...

Maybe i'm too anal, but so far in my 5 years of S/RS ownership, i've only come away from one specialist completely satisfied.
Tomorrow is another day

The staggering thing is that outside of most of the web-forums and people in general that do some research into the 'specialist' cars within the marque, all the S & RS owners generally still believe that they are getting the best service level from he dealer network!!
