Heard good things about Shell oils, and especially the Helix.

Maybe worth PM'ing oilman on here...?

Can't you get hold of Synta Gold easily? Used by many on here, including myself

thats the same 5w/40 but thought shell/mobil would be better as they claim to be more advanced.

Hmmmm, surely VAG's own oil will be just as good......I don't think you'll go wrong with either.

Decided to go with the Shell Helix in the end. The old oil was blacker than i thought it would be considering its only 3k or 6months old.

next job will be the gearbox and diff!

I had Miller in the last oil change in the RS4, but I have Mobil in case of a top up.

I used Shell helix for most of the time I had the S4 (5 pot 20v'er) and it was as smooth as a babies bum which I gotfrom my localAudi dealer.

Planning on changing the RS4 oil soon as its now covered about 6k miles since January. Its standard and has a relatively easy life so was wondering about Castrol Magnatex??

I had a look on Castrols website and its says Magnatec isn't suitable for the RS4. My mate Richard could do your oil change for you, he's becoming quite the expert on RS4's!

a couple of cold starts with the Shell Helix 5w/40 and the car is definately quieter on start up. The previous oil was 10w/40 according to the service history, not sure which brand.

Magnatec isnt fully synthetic, so thats a no no. I used 10w 60 castrol on my last change, im gunna use synta gold from now on tho. Its cheaper and what vag use, so cant go wrong.

Motul 300v 5w-40 in mine. It's a group V oil (Ester based) so not cheap but it does smell lovely.

Is Synta Gold available form anywhere apart from the stealers ? And what guide price are we talking about ? Couldn't see it on VAGParts....

I assume it comes in 5Litre containers, not 4Litre....

TIA

Rick.

I think GSF used to stock, not sure if they still do

You can buy it in 5, 20, and 208 litres!

5 litres is around the £30 mark IIRC, bear in mind you'll need to buy 2 for an oil chnage on the RS

brainstrorm.... I use the Castrol Magnatex in the WR quattro, Shell Helix in the S4 and Miller last time in the RS4.

@ Lee could your pall source an oil filter then please this week? I am on shift from 08:00-20:00 so dont have the opportunity to go and get one. Hsving an oil change this weekend when the splitter is fitted is 1 job off the things to do list.

Thanks Lee, I'll go with your oil recommendation.
