The new RS4 is the fastest RS ever produced (in stock mode) apparently....it looks the dogs bollocks inside and completely different to the std car. I'm not knocking the B5 RS4 but it does look the same inside as my car which looks very similiar to a 1.6auto inside.....

99% of cars depreciate, most of them like stones. My car is very nearly 5 years old now and with its options and mods (MTM stageII, brakes etc.) and mileage (34k) I reckon its worth £30000 or as near as makes no difference, which means it is still worth 63% of its original price after 5 years. Can't think of many cars which can even come close to that. Besides, I couldn't buy anything near the performance and practicality of my RS4 for £30000, for that money there is nothing to touch it.

I have no intention of selling regardless of any impact on its residuals. I bought it because I just loved the car and had wanted one for a very long time. It will still be worth good money in 5 years time beacuse of its relative rarity, providing it is appropriately cared for :kissmyrings:

Quite agree with Bakerdcb - where else can you get the performance of the B5 RS4 for the money? OK, you could go for the Evo's ond Scoobies but they are a bit "in yer face" compared with the Stealth like RS4.

Actually, I wonder what proportion of Evo or Scooby owners have points on their licences compared with us lot?

The B5 RS4 was and is a rare car only 380 (or 400) UK models made, no doubt quite a few are no longer on the road now.

My personal thought is that residuals will be "firm".

I'm keeping mine cos the TVR that can replace it is not reliable, unrefined and can't carry my scuba kit in the back!

Got to agree with you guys i usually chop and change my cars a fair bit but cannot top the rs4 as an alround package and dont think theres a much safer place to have my wedge,i went out in an early e36 m3 that i was considering buying to use for work i was shocked at that a 300bhp car felt very boring in comparison it was a bit of an eye opener its going to take something special to get me out of the rs,every time i get itchy feet and try something else they are a dissapointment for what i want anyway,im sure many others who actually own one feel the same

Far too many people worried about how much money they are losing...Simple solution is to not buy an expensive car in the first place. Me, I dont even think about it, I just keep piling the miles on and enjoying the car. I might come sell it one day, then again I might not. :rocker:

Tend to agree with Gav, what is the point in having a decent quick car and not using it to preserve the value.... yes it hurts when they loose a few bob, but that does not compare to the fun and enjoyment of driving the thing.

God yes. I get people asking me why I don't buy a banger to drive to work every day (and I thought about it when the commute was 60 miles a day!). But it's just too much fun, and you only live once. I've had the car just over a year and done 20k miles already but I wouldn't swap it for anything else!!

Agree with many of the comments, drive the car and yes it will lose value, but I bought it to enjoy the damn thing and enjoy it I will. :jump_clap:

Falling values and cars go together like bacon & eggs, if you can't handle it don't buy the car....! :biggrin3:

Tweaky made the original posting, now Tweaky you could wait until October, or November, or December to see if the B5 residuals take a dive. In that time your current car (whatever it is) will have lost some value too and in that time you could be in an RS4 B5 and enjoying it. What price enjoyment?

Then you might think, well hold on, the new reg's come out in March will that affect RS4 B5 residuals, or the petrol/oil crisis in the US Gulf States?

All cars are going to cost you money - why not have one that you enjoy driving? You could end up like my other half, stuck in a car that you don't like (she actually loathes and detests it).

Go on......take the plunge, the waters lovely.

Thanks for all the views on this, and i do agree with you about the just buy it, drive it and enjoy it theory. I am currently in an S4 avant with 340hp and 410ftlbs, and am in a bit of a dilema about where to go from here. I can't decide whether to buy the RS4 or stretch the funds and go for an RS6. If i go with the 4 then i am going to have to shell out a good few grand in order to get it sorted...i.e remap for some midrange grunt, brakes and suspension. With the 6 i will have the midrange grunt (with more on tap after a remap) and stopping power as standard, it will also seem like a new car to me as it will be nothing like the S4, where as the RS4 will seem like stepping into my S4 but with different seats and more power at the top of the rev range. I am sure this is over simplifying it all, especially as i haven't actually driven either the RS4 or 6 yet, but the RS4 will have to be very very good to justify my car plus about £18-20k

Don't kid yourself that you won't mod the RS6.... It's in your blood!!

Look out for a mildly modded RS4, and you'll probably find what you want.

Tweaky - depends on where you are, perhaps an RS4 owner would let you have a spin in a standard or mildy modded example?

Oh i am under no illusions, i know i will modify whatever i buy i am sure....if there is more to be had, then i want it  . Has anyone actually pitched a 450bhp RS4 against an RS6 that has been remapped, i assume would be around 520bhp ish. I would imagine when driven flat out they would be similar in performance as the RS6 is heavier, but in every day effortless speed...i.e not screaming the nuts out of it then the RS6 would be quicker.

I just need to get out there and test drive some...problem is most of the RS4's that are up for sale at the mo seem to be standard, which after mine with big midrange grunt will seem a touch flat i would imagine.

Not sure if anyone has done the modded RS4 vs modded RS6 comparison....I think it'd be close though (about 500bhp for a chipped RS6 I think, vs 420 for a modded RS4 - both just a chip) I think the RS4 would possibly have the edge due to weight....handling wise maybe the RS6 would be better as standard (standard RS4 is a bit wallowly).

Mine COULD be coming up for sale soon if you're interested...PM me...it's had the mods you need done already.
