I didn't know the Germans have a sense of humour (check what Wittgenstein wasted his time doing on his arrival in Cambridge), most of their jokes are missing the punch line.
The apparent lack of standardisation of parts is due to VAG's habit of negotiating with suppliers 'to the third decimal point', as the locals describe it. There is no fun in doing business with VAG group companies anymore, sensible businesses are beginning to avoid them. The Audi production lines are very clever, you could build tanks, anthrax bombs, golems, anything you damn well like on them, so what's a switch of ECU amongst friends.
As long as its the Turks, Poles, Roumanians and Osties who lose their jobs when the factories are closed, I don't think the locals are going to cry too much!
The reciprocating bits and TTs are built in Hungary, VWs in Slovakia, Touaregs, Cayennes and Bentleys in the Mosel valley, Gallardos in Neckarsulm, they still move bits around in boats....
