god i hope they don't have a boxo f bolts left over when they put it back together, what dealer replaced the clutch sounds like they need a good kick. Once again auid don't inspire confidence on there repairs but i'm sure the tech in aberdeen sounds like he knows what he's doing.
Hope it's not of the road too long, oh do you get a replacment car in the meantime?

Aye the tech lad Graham knows how unhappy I have been with Specialist thieves and that I'm keeping a regular eye on what is going on.

My car was the only one in the workshop with the wing protectors on it!

He had a rubber glove over the exposed CV joint of the prop shaft. A good no off bolts etc had been temporarily replaced. He had removed the main engine wiring loom at the ECU rather than each and every sensor. (There is a serious No. of sensors on that engine)

The front bumper was sitting up off the paint work. However with so many parts removed and lying about the place with other techs pulling air lines etc around the car. I'll bet I'm not seeing the half of what goes on in the workshop. Still what can you do but let them get on with and see how it all transpires?

They have given me a new A3 1.6. Hhmm it's making me think twice about an RS3. The body design of the A3 leaves it very blind for reversing in fact reversing with the mirrors seems to be the safest option! To prove the point the car has less than 3K on the clock and already one of the courtesy drivers has wrecked the rear bumper big time!


The 1.6 engine is seriously under powered for the weight of the car very sluggish compared to the girlfriends 1.6 fiesta which would tear strips of it. It is taking some getting used to. On the positive side it looks good, handles very well, has dual heaters has about the same space in the back as the A4 and I like the 6 stack in car CD player. :)

Well I finally got my baby back last night. Two weeks to the day. So far it seems to be fine - Amazingly the young tech Graham (23) has come good on his word. He did all the little additional jobs I asked. Everything looks to be fitted well with no additional scratches, rattles etc etc. The car seems to pull much the same as before it went in. Not that I had any complaints before it went in after the initial flat mode was cleared. (it was still pulling 163 until the limiter kicked in - its unmodded.)

Specialist Thieves actually called me twice weekly to keep me up to speed. All in all, I'm very happy with their service. They have certainly improved big time from my last experience with them!

I suppose time will tell if the work is A1. But first impressions are good :biggrin3:

Regarding the diagnosis with respect to helping others to see this coming or worse, should they buy an S4 or RS4 out of warranty. It was interesting that other than the one off flat spot, there was no other indication from the performance of the car to indicate the leaking turbo seal.

I hadn't noticed a significant drop in the oil level, or smoke from the exhaust. The only thing that gave the game away was the faulty lambda sensor readings. Which, in itself is not enough to condemn the turbos. The real indication of the problem was established when the tech removed the intercooler pipe and oil came out of it. However, should be noted that there will always be a trace of oil in the whole intake system owing to the crankcase breather.

The other possible indicator is that on start up I could hear what sounded like a leaking exhaust coming from the engine bay area. Quite subtle but a definite leak none the less. This would disappear within literally 2mins. I checked for leaks myself and told the tech about this when the car went in. They never found any leaks. This may be completely unrelated, but there is no leaking sound now?

So upon looking at the symptoms a VAGCOM/diagnostic check is a quick and useful check to give some indication to the output from the lambda probes which should detect any oil leaking into the exhaust side of the turbos. This of course relies on the seal to have failed such that it is leaking oil into the exhaust side of the turbo. It may well be feasible for the oil to leak from only one side of the turbo?

Therefore, the more complete check is to determine if any oil is making it into the intake or exhaust, which if course requires the removal of parts. This of course is not practical if your only looking to buy one of these bi-turbo'd beasts!

Never seen a mountain bike doing 90mph before :lol:

I think I know Graham, he used to work in Audi Center Parramatta. He was quite knowledgable

Hey Dog, when I'm up talking to Graham next I'll ask him if he worked Audi Center Parramatta. If true - that'll shock him to think the world is indeed a very small place!!
