K16 Turbos ??

Post by dodgydave » Mon Jan 16, 2006 1:24 pm

Guys,

I'm looking to go for a big upgrade this summer to break the 600bhp barrier.

Now, reading about the Blue thunder MTM RS4 they’re saying that they have replaced the K04s with K16s. And I'm not talking about modified K04s with K16 guts.

Now, the K16 don't fit normally but I'd like to know if it's just the MTM cast iron manifold that allows them to fit or have they done other modification? Maybe moved the engine mounts???

Or, on that note what else turbo/manifold combination supports 600BHP +?

Cheers,
Dave

Yeah, I know those, which are essentially K04/16, right ?

But what do I need to fit k16/24 hybrids ?

Dave,

I don't want to highjack this thread but what else have you done to the engine to support 600bhp?

I'm sure this won't help answer your question either but you could always cut two holes out of the bonnet

Dave

The ASP gt25r kit includes turbos, custom manifolds and downpipes which would bolt on to the RS4 engine.

Let me get this right... They redesigned the manifolds and put external wastegates on becase they didn have the room to fit the correct actuators??? Sounds like some serious overkill! :D

External wast gates are much better than internal ones , my m8 has fitted one on his race car , it now getts up to max boost faster and stays there untill the red line . it was used on the old 944 turbos ..

Yeah, I really like that kit!!!

External wastegates are better for numorous reasons like that they eleminate the exhaust gas turbulances you've got with the internal flaps. They also take some heat out of the turbos.

I talked to autospeedperformance yesterday and they said you can also fit GT28s on those manifolds, which would be more suitable to break the 600HP barrier. Further the turbos spin up quicker than standard K04s because of the ball bearings and they produce much less heat for the same boost levels. Their manifolds have a better exhaust flow than the expensive MTM cast iron onces and they're manufactured with the least possible amount of weld eals.

Unfortunately, they weren't prepared to ship me the parts I need. In fact they don't sell this as a kit yet and won't be doing so for a long while (if ever). They offered to tune my rs4 if I ship it to the US !!!

How much would that cost ?

I think they're loosing a good oportunity here. They said they never put that kit on a RS4 my car would be a first. I could make serious PR over here if this kit kicks arse on the RS4 !!!

Who on here would consider upgrading to 600+bhp for an all in price for around £16,000-£19,000 ??? Seriously ?

I reckon If we can raise some serious intrest over here they might consider shipping the kit ....

Have you talked to Keith Murray at Dialynx ? I think he does the kind of things you are interested in.

I thought the price for the kit was $13k? + VAT

Tune your RS4 in the US :D If they do it parts only and cover the labour, why not (they keep the intellectual property) - can you get a car shipped there and back for say 3k + insurance?

I would want a proper map done on it though....

K16's

Post by S4RS4 » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:21 pm

I have my S4 currently being prepared using genuine K16/K24 hybrids with water cooled bearing housings, AWE tubular manifolds, 3" DP's. There are 2 choices of K16/24 turbo - MTM used the one with slightly larger turbine housing but I have gone for the 550bhp version in the interests of lag. Just getting my RS4 engine rebuilt with stronger rods, ported heads etc. Then off for the MoTeC to be mapped again. Let me know if you need any help on this.
