Exhausts/Shortshift ??

Post by chrisn » Tue Sep 28, 2004 6:58 am

Right then. I am about to start modding the car . Completely standard at the mo. I am thinking about a milltec exhaust ( not worried about power gains yet ) so do I get a full system or Cat back section. Then onto the Short shift - are these any good ? And maybe a Hyperboost diverter valve from milltec ? Any ideas guys ?? ( Before I go and spank my cash on these little goodies ) :?:

Short shift is a must. I have Tanoga, and am very happy with the shift. Stock shift was a nightmare after RS2, now it's a lot better. As for DV's, you get no performance gain, so I'd go for a chip first. Makes a world of difference to mid range torque.

Exhausts, ideally you'd take the full system with a chip, and get about 460 hp with the right chip. Cat-back will give you the same noise, with no real gain in power.

has there been any actual posted dyno runs of pre exhaust and post exhaust rs4s with a chip.
i have heard from both sides that an exhaust doesnt improve power by much if by any at all.
the reason i ask is because i have been interested in getting the milltek for a while, but can't justify it if there hasn't been any actual dynos posted to prove it.

It depends if the exhaust is the full system or just the cat-back part.....I don't think there's any debate over the fact that a full system will get you serious gains (with a remap to take advantage of it of course).

I'd guess you'd see gains with a full system without the remap, but I've never heard of anyone doing it that way round...remapping/chipping gives you the most bang for your buck in the first instance.

Just curious...if you're not worried about power gains at the moment, why are you thinking of changing the exhaust ?

In my opinion, the money spent on a full Milltek would be better spent on some decent suspension, you'll be able to 'use' more of the car's power then - I'd make the car handle and stop before you give it any more power...

I think the standard 3 stages of tune speak volumes of how much the exhaust does.

Standard 380bhp
Stage1 (Chip only) ~420bhp
Stage2 (Chip plus cat-back) ~428bhp
Stage3 (Chip, full system incl cats) ~458bhp.

Personally it seems a bit pointless in putting on a full freee-flow exhaust incl cats if your not going to take advantage of it by improving on the standard map.

I'm pretty sure someone has some plots posted in the photos section of a standard vs 458 car.

The reason I have to change the exhaust now is because it is not sounding the best - Well , it sounds quite mad , big hole in back box!!!! Never seen this before !! Suspension and brakes at xmas as well as a nice re-map .. I need to slap on some new rubber - Does anyone have any recommendations ... Michelin pilot sports or b'stone S03's ??

I'd just go for the catback job then if your not having anything else done at this stage.
Just make sure though that it will still be compatible if/when you want to do the rest of the system.

I have tried both tyres and they are both as good as one another imho. The michelins do seem to go hard after a while though.
Try doing a search of the archives as tyres have been discussed several times before.

AMD fitted cats back exhaust and quick shift in about 2 hours and at a cost of £1100 inc vat and labour, and took me shopping while it was being done. The car is standard apart from these mods and I have to say it was the best money I have ever spent.
