Now it won't start

Post by Imol4vant » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:32 am

About a week ago had to turn the key a few times before it started. Seemed like it was running rich. Tick over very slow for cold start and very rough. Touch throttle engine cuts. started it a few times then left it to run for a few mins was back to norm, ran about for a while, started and worked fine for rest of day.

Next day exacly the same.

Wanted to use car yesterday. Now will only run for three secs then dies. After quite a few attempts started to smell petrol and the dash screamed red at me. I guess this is the lamda sensors getting all moody about unburnt fuel coming their way.

Tried unplugging MAF no joy.
Took airbox out cleaned cold start flappy thing, sucked the tube, seems to work ok.

Have read a couple threads about temp sensors, will order them from Audi tomorrow so I can rule them out.

Ordered some Bosch F5DPOR plugs yesterday so I can rule them out.

Don't have VagCom yet so just guessing.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried spraying some carb cleaner into the throttle body?

No, but it would be something to try.

Are they prone to getting gunged and sticky?

Finally ordered VagCom today. Should arrive Wednesday.

Was thinking if I stand in front of the car shaking the box, shouting "Ha Haaa!!!", will scare it into working,

as I have no idea how to use it.

Yes they are. Let the carb cleaner soak for 1/2 hour before starting the engine.

An update

VagCom got a van ride to another town on Wed, so didn't get it till Thursday. Thanks sorting office.
After a long Thursday afternoon of the wife staring impatiently at the blue case I finally got back from work.
Software loaded, was dragged to the car. Plugged in and it said........

9 Faults Found:

17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (check Temp-Sensor and Thermostat) Was what I was hoping to see. Thermostat I think is fine as car heats up at the right speed then sits at 90'
P1296 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected. I think from trying to start the car to much and it running too rich.
P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected. I think from trying to start the car to much and it running too rich.
P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Malfunction in Circuit. I think from trying to start the car to much and it running too rich.
P0130 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16622 - Manifold Pressure / Boost Sensor (G31): Signal too High. I think from trying to start the car to much and it running too rich.
P0238 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17952 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Signal too Large. I think from trying to start the car to much, it running too rich and me trying to touch the throttle
P1544 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17579 - Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle Actuator (G188) Implausible Signal. I think from trying to start the car to much, it running too rich and me trying to touch the throttle
P1171 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17956 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75): Open Circuit. I think trying to start the car with it unplugged after fitting new one, just to see.
P1548 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too. Low Was new a month ago not had any probs, did try to start once with it unplugged no change.
P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Moved the mouse about a lot and found something that was reporting the outside temp as 16' and the coolant as 94'. I would have expected around 16' also. Battery warning appeared on dash. Walked away, had dinner and put my feet up.

Friday morning.
No work. Audi to pick up a seal and order green one way valves, factors to pick up new plugs, grabbed carb cleaner whilst there. Wife phoned, wheel spacers arrived.
Home.....
Bonnet up, maf out, Y pipe off, airbox out, header tank out, Ooo that's where that is, Mmmm that's dirty, cleaning cleaning cleaning, spark plugs in, sensors in, (four pin one was giving some funny ohm readings) put some bits back on and packed up. (First and last job spayed throttle valve through sensor hole.)

Today.
Out to Audi picked up valves. Had to come in to work. Babysitting a film crew till 13:30. GET OFF MY STAGE! Sitting looking at the green valves.
They're packing up, shovel them out the door and I'm out of here.

Get back to you later.

Got home.......

Post by Imol4vant » Thu Jul 29, 2010 12:06 am

Been a bit busy.

So, got home. Valves on,header tank on, coolant in, airbox, maf , y pipe, tighten evrything, check it all 50 times and even bunged a new clutch switch in just to keep Jimbo happy. Is your engine in yet? (I see you're back in the kitchen) I did clear all codes but decided to see if car would run before trying again.

Grabbed the key, paused, don't want to do this , turned it and it burst into life like nothing had ever been wrong. Ticking over smoothest ever good constant exhaust note. Switched it off ran an autoscan, 1 lambda thing, cleared that and went for a wee (Scottish) drive. Tried not to but the turbos were whistling so loudly pleeeeeeeze I had to. Oh my god, whiplash, hyperspace is back. Revs dropping off best ever therefore better gear changes. Must update revs rising.

Got back and autoscanned. No codes. Wife jumped in with the laptop and off for a burn. Well she's giggleing again so it must be fixed. We love our car.

Jimbo, when VagCom says specified torque 599 metric, what is that in imperial (your favourite subject) and what does specified mean?

Thanks to years worth of forum stuff to search through and help from you guys, fixed again.
