Lost Sound on radio

Post by RS4ever » Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:13 pm

My radio has suddenly lost all its broadcast. When i turn it on, it shows the station and then immediatly switches and shows the frequency but doesn't play anything, it just hisses. I can search right across FM and AM and it finds no stations.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Same thing happened to my radio and im at a loss as to what it may be. A company had my head unit out and then when I got it back it did not pick anything up....Checked all connections etc, all OK. Changed out diversity unit in back, no joy....so now im at a loss as well.

Hopefully someone may have some suggestions to try..good luck

I realise this subject is not as sexy as talking about 8-pots and coil overs but surely someone must know what this could be.

Just a guess, but I know that if the "Amplifier" in the Ariel (under roof lining) fails, you will not get a reception.

Ah...ok then, how do you get to it, just looked in that area and tried to remove the plastic trim with no joy, felt as though it may break if I pulled it any harder....Is the amp part of the aerial housing ?

Yes, it's part of the housing underneath.

Before you start taking roof linings down, I have been told that Vagcom can "possibly" detect if you have a faulty part. I know I called it the amplifier but it's actually a device that searches for the strongest signal and again, if it's not working, you won't get a reception. I have also been told that it can simply be a loose connection to that part of the Ariel.

I been told you can get to it without totally removing the roof lining but I'm afraid I can't personally tell you how to do it.

I've got the same problem with mine. Been like it for the last 3 years or so - I never listen to the radio anyway, so never bothered me too much.

I have got a problem with very similar symptoms. Its on an RS6(C5). Over the last week the radio works fine for about 10mins ish and then suddenly i lose all reception. if i turn the volume up high i can just make out the station amongst all the hiss. Have posted on Electrical forum and various members have been trying to help me diagnose the source of the fault. From whats written here looks like its it could be my amplifier too.

I will check with VAGCOM tonight and see if any errors have been logged.

Any updates from those with the same issues? Replaced the amplifier? Found other possible sources? Any more info would be much appreciated!

Very common problem- having issues myself and have given Virdee a big headache trying to source a replacement with first the chassis number and then the actual part number....
You can get to it by popping out the luggage bay light, prise off the black cover to expose the PCB. Unscrew the bee sting and gently twist the remaining black cover clockwise until it pops off to reveal the top nut.
Didn't get any further than this because we'd sourced the GPS antennae base, not the 'standard' mast. And the reason standard is in commas is because there are a multitude of fitments apparently. Virdee and I have given up- off to Audi tomottow morning with the cover and part number but not holding my breath.....
Will probably get an Alcantara steering wheel so not completely wasted trip.....

Ok let me know how you get on. Also, I have a saloon so I'm guessing getting my roof lining off might be a bit more tricky/fiddly!!

Just an update on my problem: Just driven from southampton to north wales, 5 hours and radio worked all the way and is still working! B*****ks! I hate these bloody intermittent problems. Im now wondering if its heat related! Could be absolutely anything couldnt it! Electrical faults are usually a nightmare to trace!
