It's rated at 'only' 350hp, so should have very simialr performance to a std RS4.

Were you in the right gear?

What's your peak MAF airflow looking like? It should be just over 300g/s. Get the thing mapped!

Porsche horsepower is usually on the conservative side, and you have to take weight, aerodynamics, and gearing into consideration.
Having owned several 911s i can safely say that time and again i outran cars which, on paper, i shouldn't have stood any chance against.
The main thing i'd put it down to is power delivery and gearing - the combination is remarkably effective.

nige - i was in the correct gear which is what surprised me as 4th in the b5 is pretty potent....... a remap is now a given just need to listen to a car with 3"dps and decide if i can live with the extra noise as opposed to a normal catback resonated system and gutted precats. to check the maf nige do i need to do a run in car or can it be done stationary?

verysideways - i think what held the 997 in favour over me was his lesser kerb weight they are over 100kgs lighter i think? but still it shifted which really surprised me - still lovely shape the 997.

You will need vag-com a a 3rd gear WOT run to the redline to check MAF output.

I still think it should've been much closer, regardless of any slight weight advantage the 997 had - you should have the edge on torque too. And they are both 4wd, so transmission losses are similar.

Maybe it had the new porsche PDK gearbox - I've got DSG on my Golf and there is almost NO interuption to acceleration when changing up - on a turbo car this can add to a full second whilst changing gear, then bringing the boost back on - this vid shows what I mean ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8g91bdoC_M

damn - regardless of the lapse in acceleration when the gears are changed in that video the way it pulls would see most things off, lol - that is one quick car.

well test maf, recently had service done and when engine was checked for air leaks nothing was found so dont think i got boost leak. only other thing i can put it down to is the wife screaming blue murder when she woke from her slumber as i changed from 3rd to 4th lol........

Yeah, that's one quick car, but compare the gear change against this 997 C4S with PDK .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUoPx2BtWBI

flippin heck that was seamless - i did wander nige if the 997 was a pdk car but he had a private plate on it. so unable to establish age etc.

maybe i need to re-evaluate my romanticised view about the b5's capabilities........and start thinking about that c6 rs6 saloon on ph, :D

You should have been all over it mate, I had a run with a 997 Turbo on an airfield last week and it was level all the way to top speed. Nothing in it between both cars and mine is running around 420bhp.

I'd get yours checked for EGT problems, MAF faults or boost leaks etc... as nige says log block 3 and run at least 5 WOT's to redline from 2000 rpm in 3rd gear and look at the max g/s output, a standard car should be around the 300-310g/s figure. Divide the top figure or average from the 5 runs by 0.8 and that should give you an estimated bhp figure.

the battery on my laptop is dead so cant do a running vagcom at moment. but taking on board what you guys are saying makes me feel a bit better again :)

thing about the b5 is that it still retains a small sense of 'oldiness' (does that make sense) which appeals to me over newer cars which seem so clinical.......

Bring your motor down and we can vag-com it for you and then I'll take you out and we can compare standard to remapped.
