I first read about all those panels being different apart from those in one of the original road tests back in 2000.
Front doors don't have side mouldings or holes for side mouldings and there is an additional reinforcement panel between door shell and subframe preventing window lifting at high speeds.
The self study programme (available in the downloads section) also confirms a different tailgate spoiler which has additional mountings which require modifications to the tailgate - (I was surprised by this too!).
This is reflected in ETKA which lists the following;
S4 tailgate - 8D9 827 023 R
RS4 tailgate - 8D9 827 023 AB
May I thus suggest a very sincerely good natured

The tailgate is different, only slightly but it is different and has it's own part number which I suspect costs more to buy.I stand corrected. But does a different rear spoiler really constitute a different "Panel".
You have to look at it from an Audi PR perspective, trying to justify the extra cost of an RS4 over an S4 so the more changes the better. I agree it's not massive but does give an insight into the effort quattro GmbH went to to take it to the next level.

The rs4 has a differant part number as it has holes along the top for the spoiler to screw to,,

Got your copy yet?So who owns the HJO now? Here's Tiff test driving it for TG back in the day.
If so you should have read that W117 HJO got stolen and burnt not long after that was recorded for Top Gear in late summer 2000.
The Avus W116 HJO I haven't seen again but it's currently taxed!
The Jay Kay W272 EWL must have been the replacement press car for W117 HJO as the full press office pic which I have framed is dated 'Oct 2000'.
