Short shifter - any real issues?
Short shifter - any real issues?
Since day one of owning my RS4 I was not really satisfied with the way OEM shifter shifts and wanted to install a short shifter.
But I've read and heard from several sources how bad that is for your gearbox, synchros etc.
So the question is - I know a lot of you use either Tanoga, JHM or other shifters - what are your experiences? Any noticeable problems with your box after you installed it?
Thanks in advance!

ESP shortshifter – no problems so far.
You can buy an OEM SS therefore I wouldn't think there would be any issues.

RE: Short shifter - any real issues?
I have the tanoga, and i've had no issue's at all and i find it a smooth gear change
Drive low,park lower
RE: Short shifter - any real issues?
ESP one is great vfm - recommend getting the weighted knob to ensure it feels as smooth as possible
any SS will make it feel a bit notchier - apart from maybe the diy mod to the existing shifter

RE: Short shifter - any real issues?
It doesnt do your box any harm, but what it will do is amplify the notchy change, theyre very fiddly to adjust and get aligned perfectly though
RE: Short shifter - any real issues?
I would like to know the above too...
For those who are running the ESP SS, how long have you had it? and have there been any issues/glitches etc with regards to gear changes or anything
I have one sitting in garage, but not sure if this is the route to go, as i've had some varied feedback
thanking you in advance for your input

as long as you don't fit the incorrect one like me then it will be fine!N11LS_J wrote:I would like to know the above too...

I've had an ESP SS for around 4 months (middle setting) and everything seems fine at the moment!

as above i think if its fitted correctly then there is no problems. however, if you have a gearbox with wearing synchros then the SS may accentuate the wear.rhunter203 wrote:I've had an ESP SS for around 4 months (middle setting) and everything seems fine at the moment!

I've recently chatted to a friend of mine (top mechanic) who said, if the SS is fitted incorrectly then you'll screw up the synchros....

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Short shifter - any real issues?
I've got what I believe is a Tanoga SS fitted before I bought with a ESP stainless gearknob and the shift quality is sublime- have a ESP transmission stabiliser too- no driveline shunt- everything feels really tight, positive and well sorted. Sometimes have a problem with reverse- not all the time but I find for some really odd reason that if I slide it into 5th and then out straight into reverse its as smooth as silk- don't know why- it was suggested by someone I spoke to a while ago and it works every time reverse is a bit recalcitrant. I never force it, if it doesn't go in after engaging/disengaging the clutch a couple of times, 5th it is.
Incidentally Liam at ESP was offering the gearknob/driveline stabiliser at a discount when he first started selling them- might be worth asking about if you were thinking about a combo of SS/knob/DS- he's a top bloke.
Regards
Steve
