High mileage cars?

Post by Dave-A » Wed Apr 01, 2009 1:11 am

Hey all,

I have a cheque arriving in the next week or so (hopefully) that will allow me to upgrade from an MY02 S3 to an 00 RS4.

The particular car I'm looking at has pretty high mileage (~140,000km, so ~87,000 miles) but has been well looked after (by the same mechanic who does the work on my car). The mileage doesn't worry me too much, however, the car has been chipped and is running an exhaust (among other things).

What would you expect the life to be on a car in this situation? I believe it's sporting an Oettinger tune and a Milltek exhaust and aftermarket diverter valves (Forge?). I'd be hoping that it should see 250,000km+ without too many troubles- is this dreaming? It's not going to hit 150,000 and have the engine drop out is it?

The car is here.

For the record, this is the best RS4 I've driven. Despite the mileage everything feels much tighter than other cars that I've tested- one was ~40,000km at a dealer, but had lived a hard life from what I could tell, and the other had 110,000km but wasn't anything special.

What do you reckon?

I don't think anyone can argue that remapping a car doesn't shorten the life of some of its components especially if its been driven in a manner to make full use of this extra performance.
Mines done 104k miles and is in good order due in part to steady motorway use and regular servicing but it is a minefield.
If it feels good then that's a good start but checking the cams is a minimum requirement to prevent more expensive work in the future.

On another note the alignment of the passenger side doors looks a bit suspect in the pics.
