Knocking/Thumping from rear when pulling away.

Post by GregorFuk » Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:15 pm

Does anybody have any idea what this could be? When pulling away in 1st I get a dull knocking/thumping which seems to be coming from the rear of the car, this carries on through second gear but after that its gone. The knocks are random, there is no regular frequency to them and they don’t increase with engine speed, the gearbox itself seems fine, I have no shifting trouble. Any ideas? Bushes perhaps?

Have been recently suffering exactly the same issue.. Mine was ALWAYS on pulling away in 1st gear regardless of revs.

Fitted a new rear diff mount (MRC poly special) and a second hand diff at the week-end and hey presto all noises/knocking has disappeared. Car feels a lot tighter and smoother through the gears.

Hmm, a new diff sounds expensive. Can I ask why you didn’t try the new diff mount on its own first before replacing the diff?

How much was the diff mount, how hard /expensive was it to change

I managed to get a 2nd hand diff for £100 ;) came for a very low mileage car and was too good a deal to refuse.....

Whilst diff was out, an upgrade to the mount was the next logical thing to upgrade !Mount was £170 (ish) plus the dreaded... 10mins job to fit

Nope, no hookers. But the car has a Miltec system and I've read that these can knock too, is this correct?

I'm still suffering from this. Have noticed that on a smooth piece if road I can feel the thumping whilst accelerating in second. It almost feels like something is winding up then moving, winding up then moving, it's not a harsh sound more a dull thud thud thud which can be felt very slightly through the seat of your pants, apparently it can be felt when sitting in the back too. Contrary to my original post there does seem to be a cyclic frequency to the thuds, they're not random as I first thought.

Still looking for suggestions as to what it could be. The car seems to drive fine, aside from the thud. Could it be because I have very very worn Toyo's on the back and half worn P1s on the front? (I'm getting a fresh set of rears this Saturday) Any other suggestions? Would a worn bush or mount produce the cyclic thudding I'm feeling? I'd be interested to hear more thoughts.

No it's not a wheel bearing, that would be more of a drone, this is a definite thud.

Seems to only happen when the car is at least semi up to temp as well.
