RDS-TMC Failure!!

Post by Norrs2 » Fri Apr 18, 2008 10:53 am

Folks

Had a message appear on my Sat-Nav screen this morning:-

"RDS-TMC Connection failed
Faulty or cannnot find connection"

I still have a Radio but no CD or Sat-Nav and centre dispaly on dashbord does not say what radio station I'm on. Also, you have to switch off and then on to change radio station before message appears, otherwise it's only the volume control that is still working!

Anyone any suggestions or do I have a goosed unit?

Thanks in advance

Incidently, TV has never worked since I got the car (not that it bothers me!)

MINE DID THIS THE OTHER WEEK, TO FIX IT YOU JUST DISCONNECT THE POWER SOURCE FROM THE TMC MODULE AND RE CONNECT. THIS SHOULD RE-SET THE UNIT. YOU CANNOT FIX IT WITH VAG-COM.

What John said, only quieter.

Getting to the wires on the TMC unit under the dash can be a PITA. You might want to try disconnecting the battery overnight, that has been known to cure this issue (though it didn't with mine, had to buy a new TMC unit).

BTW, I've had a few TV Diversity Receivers go on the blink, was caused by water damage. Rain got under the base of the aerial on the roof, travelled down the cable and got into the unit inside the rear quarter panel. Check for signs of damage on the aerial distribution box which sits on top of all the kit. Be careful of the terminals though, they are pi$$ easy to snap off when removing all the units in the cage.

Cheers for the advice guys!

Found a quick fix, in that, if I press the Return button, it clears the screen and everything operates as before, except, the display in the centre (top third) of the dash display, which does not tell you track/station etc.

The battery option though seems it might be a bit easier for my limited skills in that department!

Glad some of it is working again. Sounds like you now have an issue with the TMC module (sometimes known as the TMC CAN Gateway) though. This is the bit that will reset by disconnecting the battery overnight, if you're lucky. I'm not very technical, but I know that it's the unit that sits in the middle between the head unit and the DIS, which is why you've lost some of the display. It is a small silver box located just to the left of the steering column under the dash. Cost you a couple of hundred notes if you have to exchange one at Audi.

Disconnecting the Battery reset mine. No problems since (fingers crossed)

You could try ebay.de I guess.

Part number for mine was 4B2 919 894 X ('X' being exchange, '4B2' being RHD, '4B1' being LHD).

Cost £250 odd plus vat in 2007, but got £80 back on the exchange.

I have no idea whether that's the right part number for your car. ETKA only lists that part number for the RS4 B5, but I do remember seeing a few different TMC units on German ebay when I was looking for a replacement a couple of years back.

Good luck.
