has anybody investigated this so that you can make the foward and back slide function electrically operated on the front two seats?

IMO you would need new or seat frames from a model which has fwd/back slide function from the factory

Not worth it and for the amount of times you actually move them it's lazy 
Even Mercs and BM's don't have the front back electrical mechanism in my experience so not something common to the B5.

The new C class seat moves forwards and backwards with the button. I think the Q7 ones do but its been a while since driving one so I cant remember! I was using an S class the other week that had electric every direction in the back!!

Yes the bigger more expesnive mercs do but your average c class and E class limo's don't

The E34 M5 had full electric adjustment, so does the E39 for that matter.............So does the AMG mercs
