60k Service what oil,and what SHOULD get done?
Have been meaning to get my motor down to MRC for 60k service but work commitments mean i only really have time to take it to local stealer, theyve quoted £380 including spark plugs, ive caught them before just about to put longlife oil in it,what is the best castrol oil?im sure at 50k it had the0-30w but think after discussions on here and cam failure problems i had the 5-30w put in at 57k is it whats called castrol edge as im sure thats what the top up bottle is? What else should get done, should they strip and clean the calipers as part of the brake inspection? It feels of late like one is sticking slightly probably due to its lack of use sometimes.I want to know what should be done on a 60k service can you guys give me any pointers so i can make sure its all done. Thanks in advance

what about Mobil 1 5w/40? VAG now use Castrol Magnatec over Synta i noticed last time i was snooping around the local dealer service bay.dace wrote:Best oil IMO is Synta Gold 5W40.

I have been using Castrol RS/EDGE 10 W60 - as they say this is a great oil for high performance engines but it does look like not too many of you use it here - why?
Re: RE: Re: RE: 60k Service what oil,and what SHOULD get don
I used it for my last oil changeSql_RS4 wrote:I have been using Castrol RS/EDGE 10 W60 - as they say this is a great oil for high performance engines but it does look like not too many of you use it here - why?

I'm going to use ROYAL PURPLE 5W40 for the next oil change.

Nothing wrong with long-life oil. It's the 20k service intervals that do the damage. In terms of cam wear, surely a 0W30 is better than 5W30? My sludge-free engine has enjoyed a Mobil1 0W40 (ie longlife spec) diet for years by the way. The difference being that it gets changed every 5000 miles.
I think the brake inspection will be basic - pad thickness, disc thickness, scoring, corrosion, signs of leaks, etc. I would guess at another 380 quid to have your calipers stripped and cleaned. If your calipers are past their best there are companies who specialise in caliper refurbs and they are generally quite reasonable (EBC used to do it under the Powerstop name. Maybe still do). This is also an opportunity to have ALL of your brake fluid replaced. I have seen main-dealer technicians (not Audi) pull off the reservoir, empty it and refill with clean rather than do the job properly. It seemed to be accepted practise which, when I challenged them, they stated that DOT 4 lasts for much longer than the 2 year recommendtion. Maybe I'm a cynic but I now assume that coolant / brake fluid / spark-plug / air filter / pollen filter changes are only done properly by me.

Hmm mixed opinions then on the oil ?
Make no mistake, full synthetic oil is the only and best way to go for a clean engine and longevity. Whilst the brand is less important (I will only use Mobil 1 0-40) the viscocity is paramount.
Overhead cams, turbo engines with intricate valve-trains need to run between 30-40 viscosity to flow freely through the oil galleries. 60 is far to thick and will starve the valvetrain of oil at high revs - very dangerous!
