Just driven RS4

Post by jmn » Sun Aug 03, 2008 8:25 pm

Further to my post about servicing I have just had a test drive in a 2000x RS4.
What a tremendous car-I definitely want one.
However....
With the car I have just seen, with 78k miles, and full Audi SH, I have some concerns.
Seller bought it from Gatwick Audi in 2001-car previously registered to VAG.
I am surprised that there are only 6 stamps in the book. There appear to have been only 4 oil changes. I am aware of 'longlife servicing' but this worries me. Seller said he has used it for both long and short trips and relied on dashboard service indicator.
Audi paid part of cost for cams to be replaced at around 45k-seller paid labour only. He thought that they felt partially responsible for failure.
Car has had 2 cambelt changes, one very recently.
Drivers seat bolster nearest door is holed.
Looked at brake discs which seem to have a bit of a 'wear lip'.
Bonnet and front valance heavily stonechipped-has anyone had these resprayed? (Misano Red). If so at what cost?
Car fitted with laser detector/jammer. Are these now illegal?
Other than above car drove well and semed extremely quick.
Seller seemed a decent chap.
As ever all advice/comments gratefully received.

Get it to MRC for a check. If he's not happy with that, then he's hiding something. If it needs discs, which it sounds like it may do, then they're iro £400 a pair plus pads

Well as you've said, it must have been on the Longlife service scheme, hence 6 stamps

As I said in your other thread, the recent cambelt change is a good sign, and some saving for you.

You'd need to get the drivers bolster re-done, or speak to A20 LEE on here.

You'll probably find the brakes poor, if your enthausiastically driving, and thus you'll sooner or later upgrade to better brakes. So wouldn't worry too much about the discs

With that sort of mileage, the front end has probably never been sprayed, so thus the chips. Nothing to worry about. I'm a firm believer of original paintwork. So something like this would mean more to me, than a freshly painted front bumper, unless proven otherwise!

likewise.
my last car purchase was very clean, nice condition but not brand new paint work, sunsequently turns out to have had a light front end smash involving the offside suspension.
was a right b'stard to get the geometry perfect!

had a bolster rebuild and replaced for £100 at a trimmer near me but they need the seat for a couple of days.......fine if you have a second car or don't need it.

would defo get a 3rd party to VAG and check it over.
laser jammers are illegal, laser detectors are not.
if he has a jammer fitted it usually requires a device to be fitted behind the grill or number plate region.
