Water Leak Into Boot

Post by Jarv » Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:17 pm

I was out yesterday in extremely heavy rain on M25, in fact it was so heavy the speed limit was 50 but you could only do 30, and after I parked up for about 5 hours, I got back in the car to come home and the Navigation Plus stereo started to play up.

The cd came up with 'Error' on the screen, the TV totally decided not to work, and the radio lost descent reception. The navigation did work though.

I ran my VAGCom over it last night and got the following:

Controller: 8D0 035 192 G
Component: Radio BNO 0001
Coding: 00017
Shop #: WSC 63251
1 Fault Found:
00856 - Radio Antenna
36-00 - Open Circuit

This initially made me think that there may have been a fault with the aerial distribution box. Today, when I went to work, the cd decided to work, the TV came on but with no reception and the radio still had poor reception. This evening, I took out the cage that contains the navigation equipment and CD changer in the rear compartment and noticed some water at the bottom.

Has anyone else had an issue whereby water has leaked into this area and, if so, where did it come from?

Cheers

I would say either the light cluster or boot seal?

If the car has a sunroof, the drainage tubes have been known to leak, my car did it years ago, and cd and arial box were replaced uder warrentee, turned out the tube was folded and not emptying the water into the bottom of the wheel arch as it should.

Cheers guys. It doesn't have a sunroof so I can discount that. I'll check the light cluster and tailgate seals. Coming to work in even more rain this morning hasn't helped the situation.

I might be totaly off track seeing as you found some water in the CD area but check the passenger footwell for damp carpets too.

The central convenience module resides there. It controls a No. of items not sure about the Radio etc but worth a check anyway after serious water. I've found mine wet. It comes in from the pollen filter housing seal. Easy and cheap fix. Provided the module doesn't get a good soaking then you have to damn near rip the interior out!

So its worth everyone checking from time to time. Clear any leaves/dirt etc from around the housing so water can't gather. :kissmyrings:

Cheers Golich. Been out having a look again this evening. No sign of dampness in the passenger footwell. I took the cage out with the TV receiver, etc., again and the inner rear wing panel definitely appears a bit damp. I'm wondering if there is a small leak in rear near-side window seal, not the one in the door, the one behind it.

I wonder if anyone else has ever experienced a problem with a leaking window seal?

I'm resurrecting this thread because I still have an issue with water ingress into the rear near-side quarter panel where the TV receiver is.

The water damage has resulted in me having to replace the TV diversity receiver (it wasn't very good anyway) and the aerial distribution box. All the kit is now securely wrapped up in plastic so cannot be damaged by the slight water leak.

With all the electrical kit and cage out, if I put my hand right up inside the quarter panel, the sound deadening material appears to be slightly damp, which is higher than the light cluster, so I have eliminated that. My mechanic has a suspicion that it may be a seal around the area where the near-side roof bar is fixed to the roof. Has anyone ever had a problem with this, or has anyone ever taken the roof bar off, if so, is it easy, any tips?

Looking at it this morning, I have my suspicions about the radio / TV / GPS aerial on the roof. If the seal around that was slightly defective, then it would make sense that any water leaking in there would travel down the aerial cable and arrive in the quarter panel. Again, anyone any thoughts on this and is it easy to remove / replace the seal or is it a whole aerial jobby?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Just a post to tidy up a loose end really, in case anyone with a similar issue in the future does a search to find an answer.

I have resolved this problem. It was the seal around the GPS / TV / radio aerial on the roof. When traveling at speed, the whole aerial unit bends back and a small gap opens up at the leading edge, and, of course, rain drives its way in there. It then travels down the cables into the rear quarter panel. The aerial is now fully sealed up and hopefully the problem is sorted.

I've never been 'spotted' before, and if I wasn't yesterday whilst clinging to the roof rails at 70 in the pouring rain on the M25, I'm never likely to be.

I have just had this happen, how do you get the aerial off to re-seal it? Any ideas
