Vag-Com

Post by RS4Ralph » Sat Apr 19, 2008 10:18 pm

Guys,

I'm relatively new to this...

I ordered a VAG-Com (OBD 2) and received it today in the post. So, the DIY projects got an immediate shelving as I tried to load the new software.

For the life of me, I could not load the driver and the software would not recognize the driver / interface.

Is the OBD 2 not a very good package (afterall it was only £ 15)? Is the Ross-Tech package from the States way better? I've sent a note to the chap on ebay that sells these units but not hopeful that I'll get a reasonable response back in regard to loading and my PC recognizing an appropriate driver for the OBD 2 interface.

Any tips on what package is best for the RS4 and where I get one and how long it takes to get delivered.

(Getting an H&R set up to replace the crap stock suspension I've got on right now, so looking forward to proper handling for once. I'll put it on the rolling road also, so well see what she's got...).

Thanks guys,

Stan

I ordered a VAG-Com (OBD 2)
I take it this isn't actually the real VAG-COM?

Only the Ross Tech software is VAG-COM and there is no true rival for it.
It's been said before on this forum, VAG-COM is worth every penny and Ross Tech deserve to be supported because they have broken the main dealers stranglehold on diagnostic work.

I've been using it for 5 years and it's paid for itself many times over.

This is one of the UK suppliers, whatever they charge it's well worth it.

Don't waste your money on a cheap replica vag-com cable. There is absolutely no comparison to the real thing. I have the same opinion as above, the USB CAN cable is a top tool, and mine has also paid for itself many times over. Also with a genuine VAG-COM cable it will enable the full use of the software, not just the basics. I think I paid around £180 for my cable.... worth every penny.

If you buy the genuine article and register it - Ross-Tech offer a damn good support service.

It really is a classic case of "getting what you paid for".

maybe it's about time someone organised a Group Buy for a lead - given that the £-$ rate is quite good at the moment.

Just looking at Gendan's UK site, their prices are about 1/2 Ross-Tech's US$ prices and you wont have to pay customs... I'm impressed. Cheers for the link neckarsulm.

I got mine in 2002/3 from Cister Automotive which was run by some really Audi nut called (I think) Nilesh Ramratan - no longer seems to trade in VAG COM though.

Here is another supplier - they have a forum and the boss Derek is often found on there offering useful advice

Gendan quote £260 for a HEX-USB-CAN, whereas Ross Tech are $342. Not sure if this is the lead you folks use as I'm a B7, but I'm sure the differential will be the same

Ross Tech charged me another $37.25 to ship (about 9 months ago) and it arrived in a couple of days

So £192 delivered, and PM me for details on tax
