5 months in and a couple of questions.......

Post by RS4Ralph » Sat Apr 05, 2008 5:53 pm

Hi guys, my first post, love the site...

I bought my B5 with 78k on the clock and have had the car now for 5 months. The car is fairly standard apart from an uprated exhaust (miltex I think). I have to say these months have been good, there's not too many up here in Aberdeen and it's nice to embarrass the odd rice burner who thinks he up to it. I think I will eventually go with a first stage tune at some point and uprate brakes to B7, but I'm in no great rush.

My issues:

I did expect the car to be a lot firmer at high speeds as there was a wobble from the back end. I had this checked out and it transpires there's a crack in one rear coil spring, so both will need to be replaced (P/N: 8D0511115AE). I could go with the standard part for £ 140 / ea or was wondering if there was a better spring to go for and where I could get it. Indeed, if I'm going to replace the coil, is there merit in doing a full suspension upgrade (what packages are available...???).

Last point, I know there's been a ton of stuff on brakes and sensors in this forum, but mine came on 2 weeks ago. So, I take it by the local Kwik Fit (because it was convenient at the time...). They said all 4 corners needed discs and pads and it was going to cost me £ 2400. I called bullshit and got inspected by a proper garage and there's absolutely nothing wrong with my brakes.!!! Apparently, the last owner replaced the rears with non standard pads and cut back the loom. Somehow the sensor was disengaged and to me it randomly came on. Anyway, I have been quoted from Audi to replace the loom and correct pads is £££. I am happy with the brakes now, so happy to disengage the sensor at the dash or somewhere, just to get it out of my face every time I drive, so wondering if anybody had the same experience and if there is a quick disconnect for the rear brake sensor.

Fantastic car and can't wait for proper handling.....

Thanks guys and appreciate any help.

Hi and welcome to the site ,great choice of car .I would get a nice set of H&R Coil overs for it . Better than stock. Is it the brake wire or the other half that goes to the car thats been cut ??

The wear sensors in the pads have been cut off and new looms are required. Is that the adjustable set of HR coilovers?? What about FK suspension kits, how do you rate them?

Can you not just short the cables together, my understanding is that if you bought replacement non-oem pads they sometimes don't come with the sensors. On the a8 I had the light on the dash until i did this.

The way the pad works is it goes open circuit when the pad get to a certain level. Only affected the fronts on the a8 guess its the same. There was a wire that could be shorted on the back of the clocks on the a8 but not sure about the b5.

Sure someone can add to this. but hope it helps and welcome to the forum.

Also might be worth asking in classified for replacement o.e springs, someone might have good condition set of springs to go right on the back for a giveaway money.

No point paying big bucks to be replacing with stock stuff if you have to. But if you got the dollar to upgrade at this time. As Grizz states can't got wrong with full h&r setup for about £1000 fitted and aligned.
