Air/Water Intercoolers for the Rs4

Post by andream88 » Sun Feb 17, 2008 8:19 pm

Hello.
What do you think about air/water intercoolers?
I've seen that many of you have FMIC ICs etc., but no body uses this particular type of IC.
My idea is to build 2 separate air/water systems, with 2 small front mounted radiators and two small ICs in the same position of the original ones.

Let's talk about this ;)

Bye

So are you planning to use water in a chargecooler and then run that water to a separate radiator to be cooled by the air?
RS4 in the only colour to have - Misano Red | MRC Remap | RS6+ brakes | H&R and Custom Performance Parts suspension |

Exactly.
I want to use a chargecooler.
Let me show you:

Do you think it would be better a system like this one, or a "simple" DUH FMIC??

Just had a go on the google machine for pros and cons of charge cooling:

Less lag due to shorter intake tract. Can cool below ambient air temp if tank is filled with ice. But can become inefficient once the water warms up hence the need for a rad.

I'd be interested to see results of a charge cooling system. Not quite sure where you would fit it all in the engine bay especially if you're planning to run 2.

I run a duh FMIC and the results are very good, Low pressure drop and very good cooling.

I ran a chargecooler in my old type 85 Coupe quattro with RS2-spec motor.

The results were a lot better than when I ran an intercooler, even when I went very big.

I'm going to run the same set-up in my current car, but rather than use coolant with a seperate rad, as I did on my old car, I'm having the twin chargecoolers a bit different - thicker walls.

Because, I'm going to be running R-134A through them.

R-134A??? What?

@Hutch
The two radiators in the same position of your DUH FMIC, and the chargecoolers in the same place the SMICS are now!!!

Aircon gas.

So you are going to use Aircon gas in the chargecoolers WITHOUT the radiators?

Tnx

The two radiators in the same position of your DUH FMIC, and the chargecoolers in the same place the SMICS are now!!!
So the inlet tract will be roughly the same as the std intercooler setup so no benefits decreasing the pressure drop.

The real gains your looking for is reducing IATs lower than a FMIC can. I've never had any experience with a charge cooler so i don't know how effective they can be.

The air con gas sounds interesting. Would this not need a larger air con radiator (it's pretty big already). Would you have it running full wack all the time or say link it to IATs, the higher they get the more the air con pump works?

Correct, Hutch. I'm not running aircon in my car, so the standard condenser will be retained, as well as the compressor solely for the chargecooler. I'l devise some appropriate software to control IAT's, and switch the magnetic clutch on and off as required.

Anream88: Yes, the R-134A set-up won't require any additional radiator, other than the stock S4 condenser.
