broke it already
broke it already
pulled out of a side turning last night and tried droping second at around 5,000rpm just would not go in 2nd or back into 1st,i ended up pulling away in 3rd.
with extra force i can now get all gears and they all seem to work fine, just 1+2 need to be forced.
the only probs i had previous to this was 1st gear seemed to whine and changing to second over 6,000rpm would cause it to crunch.i was not too concerned about this as i rarely drive like this and my rs2 1st to 2nd change was not the best i have had

Re: broke it already
Sounds like the synchro is gone in yours too
Re: broke it already
should i take it to audi and get stitched up, or i know a local gearbox and axle specialist who have been ok so far but can i trust them with my rs gearbox.
any recomendations for this.
by the way i checked the gearbox oil and it is low although there is no visible leaks which does not make sence.i adsvise you all to make sure yours is ok.i think they are supposed to check this on a service but i bet they dont allways, especially if yours is on a friday afternoon. Re: broke it already
If it has service history, I'd take it to the dealers, as it should be covered by the Audi warranty (that's a should, but judging by what others have siad in the past about Audi warranties...)
I'd agree it sounds like the synchro, or possibly badly adjusted gear linkage.

Too many toys, not enough time

Linkage is worth checking, it may have a badly fitted short shifter.... Cheaper than a new gearbox!!

Speaking from experience I wouldn't try to save a few quid on going to a third party. Even though they may actually have the expertese things went wrong with my S4 on refitting the gearbox to the car.
I'd go to a good independent specialist (QST / AmD) and get them to unhook the box and then arrange for an Audi geabox specialist to sub-contract the work to. If anything goes wrong you'll then have one port of call to get it sorted.
Re: broke it already
i checked with audi but as my car is a lhd import it only has 1 year warranty (according to audi)
i went to see my local gearbox man and he was very confident he had done an rs4 and some s3 gearbox repairs and according to him first gear cogs are £700+£200.
it sonds like first gear has been worn through the hardened coating and second gear synchro has been bired by the grind when changing and has caused it to be very tight to change.
i do hope i have made the right decision.
i would be interested to hear your probs with your s4 so i can try to make sure they do mine right.
i think this could be expensive,he recons audi charge £7000 for an rs4 box.anybody know how much this would cost elsewhere ie:remove box repair first and second gears and refit.sounds easy dosn't it.

Cars sold in 2001 had 1 year Audi warranty. Later cars get 2 years warranty. In the UK the extra is a dealer warranty (some people may remember how Audi UK passed this saving onto the customer ).
So assuming your car is a 2001 (), indeed it only came with a 1 year warranty.

Re: broke it already
I'm having a similar problem, 1st and 2nd gear have to be forced, getting out of 2nd is the hardest.
I had Lister Audi check it out. They started by re-adjusting the short shifter, which has made the gear change easier but not cured the problem. They disconected the gear linkage and from under the car manually changed gears. They're convinced it's a syncro/gear problem. Looks like £2,000 of labour and parts to repair. I've driven 72k miles so no warranty
However Audi UK have 50% goodwill in place for this problem on RS4s, so I suppose I should be grateful.

Re: broke it already
AT LEAST YOU GOT 72K OUT OF YOURS.MINES DONE 27K BUT I ONLY DID ABOUT 400 OF THESE BEFORE IT WENT.
MY GEARBOX WAS REMOVED LAST WEDNESDAY AND PARTS ORDERED THAT DAY FROM GERMANY (WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE APROX 10 WORKING DAYS).WHILST IT IS OUT I AM HAVING THE CLUTCH REPLACED.
I HAVE SEEN THE GEARBOX PARTS.IT REQUIRES NEW 1ST LAY SHAFT AND GEAR(BECAUSE THEY HAVE WORN THROUGH THEIR HARDENED COATING CAUSING THE WHINE),PLUS 2ND SYNCHRO(WHICH IS THE CRUNCH) AND THE OTHER PART IM NOT SURE WHAT IT IS, BUT APPARENTLEY FOR 1ST TO 2ND GEAR.LOOKS LIKE ONE GEAR INSIDE ANOTHER BUT THIS WAS BURED AND CAUSED CHANGE TO BE STIFF.
MY CAR IS STUCK ON THE RAMP UNTIL NEXT WEEK SOMETIME ,ANYWAY WHEN ITS DONE I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT IS AND THE TOTAL COST WHICH IVE BEEN QUOTED UNDER £2000 INCLUDING THE CLUTCH .(ALL AUDI PARTS).
PM ME IF YOU WANT THE NO OF MY GEARBOX GUY
