RS4 vs Porsche Turbo vs RS6

Post by JJRS4 » Thu Aug 21, 2003 4:40 pm

I was fortunate enough to be at Palmer Autodrome on Tuesday and had a chance to drive an RS6 on the track. I had already driven one on the road.

All I can say is that there is no contest between it and the RS4. The RS4 wins hands down. The RS4 was quicker, more zip to it. The RS6 felt like driving an elephant. As regards handling, I could see no difference. Oh, and that gear box - no thanks. I will not buy a new RS4 if it comes with that. Basically the RS6 is an old mans sedan - albeit a very quick one.

A fellow RS246er (RS4 owner, - sorry I can't remember your name) was there with his Porsche Turbo and we had a few laps together. He will tell you that the RS4 (my car is stock standard) was a match for the Turbo. Sure the Turbo was quicker but not that much. I managed to stay with him. Only really down the long straight did he get away. Or have I remembered it all wrongly! I await your post with interest.

Yes John, it was me!

Jeremy, I enjoyed our few laps together but there were a lot of slower cars that kept holding us up. I was giving them a very wide berth because there were some pretty inexperienced drivers out there. You were driving very quickly but I think it’s fair to say that you were only catching up with me because of the traffic. I don’t think many people would argue that a standard RS4 is as quick as a 996 Turbo around a track. On the HowFast days at Bedford I managed 2:49 in my Porsche and 3:03 in my RS4. I’m sure both would go round a lot faster in the right hands but the comparison is still valid.

Now a modified RS4, that’s a different story, I’m just waiting for some of you guys (John?) to show me what they are really capable of on a Howfast day.

Martin, Hi. Thanks. I knew I had been dreaming. Yes there were too many slow cars - a number of diesel A4's

Next time then.

I'm at Goodwood on Monday.

What's going on at Goodwood on Monday then ??

Is it a normal track day or what ??

If I'm free I might take a stroll down there for a look around (I'll tell Mrs W we're going down the coast and get lost on the way ! )

Whilst I totally agree with what you guys are saying..
it's horses for courses...

who would buy a RS6 for track day work?
If I wanted a track car I would buy a radical or such.. I agree that the RS6 is too big, too heavy, has the wrong gearbox and the aerodynamics of a brick...

makes a very comfortable car for dashing from Paris to Munich though

PS.. I've sold my RS6

I agree, there are better track cars Dave.

I couldn't make it anyway. Spent all day working on one of my cars...

Good day again. RS4 performed extremely well. Nothing much touches it at Goodwood. I had better not say what happened against the M5 in case it gets people upset again
