Mine had also bubbled around the edges of the tailgate plinth.

So like someone has mentioned, it's definitely to do with the 2 different types of metal rubbing.

Alloy does rust like steel, but it does corrode...aluminium forms a powder like crusting. This particular component forms small pits with 'orrible black stuff and this causes the paint to bubble.

Just seen this post, I had exactly the same problem on my RS4 with the boot tailgate lock strip. Its where they tighten the strip up and it pinch's the body work (so I was told by Audi Epsom body shop). Epsom booked me in to see a body expert who spent almost an hour going over the whole car measuring paint etc.. The offending part was ok'd by him and Audi ordered me a new one under warranty.

Wakefield Audi gave me an estimate to replace that aluminium boot trim for £264.08. Afterall its not part of the body! How do you guys get them to do these jobs under warranty? also had to pay them for the black rear door trim.

1) I've had no help at all from Robinsons in relation to a VW Golf I bought from them (sorry to swear guys, don't bar me cos I said "VW" and "Golf").

2) The "No" answer from Audi is the stock reply, and many people then go back to Audi Customer Services and then get it approved by arguing that the item is "bodywork" rather than "trim" which is what they rely on.

Your absolutely right Paul Robinsons are :dung: and i think Audi UK are just as :dung: and now i am going to take the info from you and Tombs and others and ram it down there throat, i dont usually roll over that easy.

?????????? That is a lot of money!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing to do (for the tailgaite) is to strip it yourself , remove the corrosion with some fine sand paper, using a tiny bloc of wood so the surface will stay nice and flat.

Go to any good body workshop with the part + chassis number+ reg and they will be able to make 100 % the same color!!!! (primer + paint+ laquer). If you say ......for cash they never refused and it will not cost £264.08. :audibash:

Theres a bit more too it than that if you dont want the corrosion to come back, the corrosion in the alloy will go much deeper than you think, use a dremmel or similar to grind out all the corrosion, depending which way the grain is flowing in the alloy this may take a little or alot of grinding, then find a friend in the aircraft industry and get hold of some alochrome 1200 and treat the bare areas it tightens the molecules on the outer surface and helps make the alloy more corrosion resistant, all in all id pay £60 for a new one if you dont want to see the bubbling back in the near future

mine is now booked in for Sept 17th, Audi initally declined to replace it under any body or paintwork warranty that the car had, but then the very helpful warranty geezer contacted Audi CS and they agreed to pay 70% towards the costs.

Invoice total for me is 78.96 which imo is well worth doing for the resale value and all that!

I thought Audi CS was non-existent?!

I've always found them to be fair in all my dealings with them and the dealerships in general.

I ordered the triangle bits from Audi yesterday (at £26 ea) I think these & the bit on the tailgate are the only bits that aren't galvinized hence the problem.

I looked at the schematic of the triange obits on the part dudes screen & it looked easy enough to fit if you attack it from the inside of the door (but I may be wishful thinking).

I also ordered an alcantara gearknob & steering wheel to freshen up the inside a bit!

Right had mine done on the day listed above and it cost 78 notes. I know they really should have covered the whole thing but it's done now and it looks far better.

I have exactly the same problem, on both triangle strips and the tailgate strip - might try and see if warranty will cover that with my local dealer...

Anyone got the part number for these rear window black trims for a 2000 saloon? Mine are corroding and could do with a new pair.

My rear boot trim is also causing the boot lid to corrode where the corners of the trim must the number plate area.

Same here, both rear door 'triangles' and probably the rear lock trim too- its definately been done- slight difference in colour I can live with- it was probably done off the car too as them made a hash of refitting the tailgate trim- ill-fitting- and have the pointy end of a self tapping screw in the interior pull down which got the back of my knuckles a couple of times- not so hot! Anyway I had a 2000 (W)1.8T Q Sport before with exactly the same issues on rear doors and tailgate, so obviously not confined to RS4's. Interesting to note that its always in EXACTLY the same place- top left if you're standing behind the car- weird.
