Tyre sidewall repair possible?
Tyre sidewall repair possible?
I bought a pair of brand new PS2s off ebay, but when fitted I found one had a tiny puncture in the sidewall.
The fitters showed me the puncture - not visible from the outside, and only when flexing the tyre could it be seen on the inside. The fitters plan to send it to a specialist repairer next week to fix this (if possible).
But can sidewall punctures ever be repaired safely on Y rated tyres? The only reason I'm contemplating a repair is becasue the puncture is so tiny and I assume a proper fix will make it as good as new. Also it means I don't have to sort out some other solution with the ebay seller - he's already agreed to meet the cost of repair.

Tyres....
Don't buy tyres on ebay !!!! Don't mess about with tyres or brakes, buy them new from a good supplier. Nowadays there is many web sites for tyres and they are pretty cheap.
A side puncture can't be repair for a car like the RS, even on my van i wouldn't !!!

RE: Tyres....
The key thing here is the rationale for why you dont repair a side wall; the sidewall of a tyre acts as the first part of your cars suspension, its the most active part of a tyre and it has to perform under very severe conditions (fast corners, potholes, cats eyes, speed bumps, rubbish roads, braking, accelerating, heat, cold, rain). Even a "fantastic" repair will not be good enough to safely perform, bin it (and put a stanley blade through the tyre when you do bin it so that no-one else ends up with it!)

RE: Tyres....
Have to say I was always led to believe a sidewall repair was not possible. In some cases in the past I have had screw/nail near or on the edge of the tread and this is followed by, "you need a new tyre mate, cant be repaird"
RE: Tyres....
The tyre can bee sent for a major repair , this is a hot vulcanised repair . Rubber as heated up and added to damaged tyre , the damaged area is put in a special heated clamp .
there is dealer near me that buys damaged tyres and repairs them , some of the ones i've seen are shocking but it's legal and cheaper than a new tyre but only just .

Pretty unanimous opinion here - not often a thread has everyone in agreement!
I spoke to some other fitters and they all echoed the same opinion - even if a fix is possible, it won't be good as new, may blow/leak in future, is it worth the risk..
I had been clinging to a hope someone may have had a sidewall repair and run with the tyre and had no longterm probs. Wishfull thinking....
I'll contact the seller and work something out.
