So how many of you have Milltek backbox non-resonated ? and can you live with the very loud sound while cruising especially if you have no precats or sportcats????

Mine has full Miltek and 150 cell cats, and dont find it too bad, but then agaiin, I only take out and drive like a muppet occasionally. Does get a bit intrusive on long journeys, but a bit more Bose drowns it out...........

The milltek catback on the B5 RS4 is very boomy in the mid range.
You just can't live with it on a day to day basis esp on longer motorway drives.
Without the cats or with sportscats would make it even worse I imagine.

I've gone from catback to full Milltek. For the first two days it was almost painfully loud - especially at around 2,500 to 3000rpm on very light throttle. It was so bad that I thought I'd made a terrible mistake, and wondered why no-one else had moaned about the noise either.

But now its settled down (!), and just makes a glorious noise on full blast, and is purring at other times. Don't know if they all settle down/bed-in like that, but mine certainly has. Or maybe its just that my eardrums are now perforated and I just can't hear it so well....

100cpi cats and non-resonated Milltek here. 130mile round trip commute every day. I love it :-)

i got so fed up of mine (100 cell cats with resonator pipes and latest model back box) that i removed the millteck back box and got an OEM rear silencer with a custom adapter to link to the milltek resonator pipes - much more silent now and no noticable change in performance.

There is boom at around 2.5k - but if you're prepared to cruise at 77mph and not 70mph, it isn't an issue, IMHO.

Gordons (Flashyg) is the nicest Milltek I've heard....He's got rid of most of the boominess and it sounds really nice. I think a LOT of these exhausts just aren't fitted properly - he took his to Milltek to be re-fitted I believe.

"BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOmy sound!"

Post by quattrosteph » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:48 pm

Had my precats removed last summer (thanks Doug at MRC for your good job) , and i can tell :

OEM down pipes + non-resonated link pipes= very Boomy!!!

OEM down pipes with noprecats+non-resonated link pipes= lovely sound, raw but not boomy at all!!!!!!!!!

I was quite surprised. 8)

Last year phil from milltek advised me not to fit the non resonated link pipes as it would put undue stress on the rear box of the system. Still managed to blow the internals of 3 back boxes out the tailpipes - thank goodness for lifetime warranties!!!
